I personally have seen that box for months now, so I don't think it's a scam though you never know but it's unlikely since it's on the official site and I don't think Wikipedia has ads at all

its literally running on free labor(except for server, tech, maintenance costs<i think>) so if they started charging for their services-they shd start paying their contributors; but i dont think they will ever do either: charge for services or pay the contributors. which is fine as long as each knows wat they signed up for(n the non profit/no charging for services doesnt change). tanstaafl.
