you read my mind CL!!!

I was just thinking about dogs and lyme disease

not!!!
how does such a thought come to your mind my friend?
I was scrolling through my feed and saw an article about a Lyme disease vaccine trial thing that was being shut down. And it just made me go yeah, it’s wild that my dog is vaccinated but for us we can’t get anything for ourselves :coronawimwim:

There was a Lyme vaccine for people. It just had really bad adverse reactions so it was taken off the market and isn't used too often. Lyme disease in dogs though is pretty severe. It can also be recurrent. We had a dog get Lyme disease and then continued to have chronic issues as a result of it and ultimately the owner wanted to euthanize it because of this.

I also wanted to add that we can typically find ticks easily on ourselves but on dogs it can sometimes be a long ass time before someone even notices their dog has ticks which of course can lead to a higher risk.

I know, though from what I read the validity of the claims about side effects was up for questioning. I didn’t know it could get more severe for dogs though, my dog had it but maybe we caught it early or something because she didn’t seem to be suffering all that much luckily.

Do people not check their dogs for ticks often in the warmer months? :susPepe:
And it’s true it’s easier to find them on us, though that’s little consolation for those who end up getting it I feel. I ofc agree dogs should get the vaccine, I’m not advocating for switching and having only a human vaccine or anything.

I mean it can progress to the point of kidney issues and lameness at times because of swollen limbs. BUT it also depends on where you live as well. In some places it is more of a concern, so testing might be more common and as a result Lyme disease might be caught quicker in those areas. And it's the same with the vaccine. Where I live it isn't a core vaccine and we recommend vaccination based on the owners lifestyle or maybe where they live in my state.

Again, where I live it's not super common to run into ticks so most people don't think about it. When I worked in a kennel I was in a playgroup and randomly found a tick on a dog that was there. I doubt the owner thought to check given the area we live in.

Oh, Lyme disease is bad no matter who gets it (not saying it's great for any people who get it) just saying it makes sense to be more concerned in regards to an animal who can't advocate for themselves. Because like I said it can progress to a horrendous point in dogs and you wouldn't know until symptoms start to show which might be a while after they actually have the disease introduced into their system.

I completely forgot for a second about prevention as well because some monthly preventions include ticks, so for people who keep up with that prevention the contraction of Lyme disease is also less of a concern in regards to the Lyme vaccine for doggos. I know that has no importance just realized I completely forgot about it.

I was so sure it would be a core one here because of the abundance of Lyme we have (my family including my dog have tested positive 5 times separately) but ig it’s not a core one here either :jisoosmh: We got one for my dog though

That's good. Also sorry about the Lyme disease, it is NOT fun. It's good you knew your area was pretty bad tick population-wise and did the vaccine.

I used to work in a vet's office and someone I knew brought in their dog with end-stage Lyme disease. Unfortunately he was, iirc, in full blown kidney failure. Owners had no clue dogs could even get Lyme disease. They wanted to get a second opinion but I don't think the dog survived long after he was seen. They hadn't known about the vaccine and didn't use a monthly preventative. That's why my doggo gets every recommended vax at this point.

Tbh one time when I had it the Lyme disease wasn’t bad, I think we caught it early or something. The other time though :dubueh: yeah. 2 years of being wtf is going on with me because no one could figure it out. But that’s in the past and my dog didn’t suffer outwardly when she had it so that’s a good consolation

That's really sad and tragic. I always hope and pray that before people get dogs or cats that they look into diseases and things they should be looking out for but I realize it's a lot of information to take in.

I'm glad it wasn't too bad then, like I and LeeHoseok stated it can get real bad for dogs.
