The English word day and Spanish word día seem very similar in both meaning and sound. However, they are not etymologically related. While the English word journal and Spanish word día are absolutely etymologically related, despite having a much different sound and a meaning that’s farther from each other.

This comes through French. Spanish día comes from dies in Classical Latin, meaning day. French borrowed diurnum from Vulgar Latin, which came from dies, and with enough sound changes it became the word jour, which English borrowed for words like journey and journal.
