Hello fellow KPS netizens/friends/buddies ! Welcome to my thread about Disability Pride month! :excitedcat:

As you may or may not know I have Cerebral Palsy, here is a video explaining the disability. it's boring but helpful and the least boring video I could find hehe

I am spastic in both my arms and legs and have a floppy torso, so that makes for a wonderful combination of falling over when I'm sitting on the couch unsupported :) And no I can't walk.

My disability makes me jump easier because my jump reflex is overactive as a result of my meningitis. So that means I jump when I hear a noise I didn't expect. Yes I have jumped when my computer loaded a slow loading page on screen. Not because I was scared but because I was anticipating a change lol. Bugs are my worst enemy because of that too.
I had meningitis or (something similar) when I was 9 months old and that caused my Cerebral Palsy. That was a brief medical history on me. :takingnotes:

The reason I wanted to make this thread was because I want you guys to be more educated on this matter. I've met many people who when they see me don't know how to act anymore. They talk down on me like I have an intellectual disability or talk over me straight to my parent or friend. I want to tell you that even though I might look a little different I'm not stupid or crazy or unable to be spoken to. I am smart enough to be spoken too and it might take a little bit longer than it a "normal" person would take but you'll get an answer. I can be your friend and I can do many things, I might do them differently but the end result is the same.
Many Disabled people face isolation because they're afraid they'll be seen as a burden. I recently had my own little set-back when I had planned to visit one of The Dungeon attractions in the city. But when I looked at their website it wasn't accessible to me. It started listing things I needed the ability of doing for me to enter the building, like being able to transfer myself into a stairlift, or to leave powered wheelchairs behind and be transferred into a general non-powered wheelchair because the facility was too small. So we had to cancel our plans, and in that moment it's inevitable to feel like a burden because in this case my disability stopped my friend from going somewhere with me. I am sick of it to be honest. We try so hard to be a part of society but it almost feels like society doesn't want us to be a part of it. Because so many things that seem normal to you are so special to a disabled person because the people helping us only make it harder for us to do. Take traveling for example, so many people with powered wheelchairs find out their wheelchair broke on the flight home, or worse to their destination. Here are a few examples of hardships we face while travelling

This woman had her wheelchair broken by Air Canada on a flight to Tel Aviv and this is what she has to say

Honestly I can sit here for hours and hours and hours talking about how disabled people are disregarded all the time. But I don't want to burden you anymore than I already have with this information. so, let me talk about how we are doing our best to end this injustice. We can't have an inclusive society without including disabled people into your daily lives. I have a right to exist, I have a right to enter all builidings regardless of age or how big it is. I have the right to travel and do so much more, it is time my rights and that of ALL disabled people are met. until then we do not have an inclusive society and we cannot rest until all buildings are safe for me to enter, and ALL airlines except powered wheelchairs on their planes and handle them with care.

Very informative :pepeclap:
It is truly disgusting how some people treat disabled people. No one should be put down or made feel ashamed of their disability. We are all humans and we all have the right to be treated with respect.

you mentioned this my friend

so I'll ask what is the best way for someone like to treat someone with Cerebral Palsy? do I to act normally and disregard the disability at all unless the other person brings it up or ???

It's okay to ask like if you meet someone with Cerebral Palsy at work you can assume they're not intellectually disabled and understand what you're saying. Even intellectual disabilities come in different grades and not everybody with an intellectual disability is stupid. I would say just start a normal conversation and see if you can ask how to address them properly.

I personally never understood why some people do this. I’ve seen people talk to the parents or the friend instead and that makes no sense. How hard is it to be a decent person? :wimwim:

But thank you for this thread, it was quite informative. And definitely opens our eyes to the crappy things that are still happening (and shouldn’t be).

As a disabled person myself, I agree with all of this! Just kindly ask, we won't bite!

@Sooyaabean (I typed Soo after the tag sign and almost tagged Soogi bc she was listed first lol) I'm disabled as well, as you may or may not know. I have a genetic condition called CHARGE syndrome that was so rare at the time I was born that the doctors were STUMPED! My mom says I got misdiagnoses of Down syndrome, CP, and a horde of others. I'm also legally blind and hard of hearing, as well as suffering from ADD, depression, and anxiety.

Well I mean I understand it's the lack of representation because initially all minorities were treated like that it's just the inequality in speaking about inclusivity that's bothering us

Thank you for reading :wjhug:
