I’ve noticed an interesting thing about squirrels (1 Viewer)

We get a lot of squirrels that hang around our place. I’m tempted to watch them. And I noticed that they rotate their food when they eat it. Interesting idea. It makes sense because the middle is the best part.​

With out squirrels most forests wouldn't exist. Squirrels only find and eat 20-30% of the food they bury. Most of the trees in a forest come from the nuts and seeds squirrels forgot about!

I even have seen them do this with crackers

Another factor of grey squirrels' (Sciurus carolinensis) high efficiency in forest regeneration is the quality of seeds they bury (Steele et al. 1996). The study results have shown that grey squirrels eat first the seeds which are damaged (infested, rotting, etc. – which would not germinate for the most part anyway) and they bury healthy seeds "helping forest regeneration to even greater extent than it was thought so far(1)" (Steele et al. 1996(1), Smallwood et al. 2001).

This could explain them turning the food around. Perhapse they are analyzing quality?
