CHAPTER ONE

Meagan’s POV

For two years, I was dating the love of my life. Or at least the love of my life according to my parents. They had set me and Mason Calhoun up on a blind date. He rubbed me the wrong way from the get-go, but I wanted to make my parents happy and so stayed with him.

And cue two years of emotional abuse and neglect. Mason picked up a dangerous drinking habit soon after our first date, but I thought I could “fix him”. We went through relationship counseling, but that didn’t work. Then, I gave him chance after chance after chance… until our daughter Stella was born. Mason had the audacity to skip the birth to go clubbing with his friends. I mean, who does that? So, that’s why Stella doesn’t have a father in the picture.

And I want it to stay that way… or do I? My therapist does say I need a man in my life, but I don’t know. But if I were to start dating again, it definitely wouldn’t be a guy like Mason.

“Meagan, come on!” my best friend, Lindsay Willis, prodded, bringing me out of my thoughts. “They just called our section of the plane!”

Lindsay and I, along with our other friend, Kiara Hatcher, were going to Seoul, thanks to Kiara’s mom being a Delta flight attendant, for a BTS concert. If it wasn’t for Mrs. Hatcher, we wouldn’t have been able to afford this trip.

This is the first time seeing a K-pop artist for all of us. I did get the opportunity to see the girl group, Twice, but I was too pregnant with Stella at the time to fly there. No way in hell was I driving all the way to New York City from Gallatin, Tennessee, either… so the tickets went to somebody else instead.

In Lindsay’s case, God decided it was the perfect time to give her the flu… and after she got over it, I ended up catching it, followed by poor Stella. It was a hot mess.

As for Kiara, she’s never really tried. She’s always wanted to see a K-pop concert, but the expensiveness of tickets and merch was something she couldn’t get past.

I happily stood up and followed my friends onto the plane. We’d be flying into Seattle first, then to Incheon International Airport in Seoul. The flight into Seoul would be over twelve hours, but we were all well-prepared.

“Well, you’re quite chipper for this early in the morning,” she observed.

“We’re going to see BTS!” Lindsay announced.

The ticket checker ripped the stubs off the boarding passes and gave them to us. “Nice! My daughter listens to them all the time. Have a nice flight!”

“Thank you,” I said.

The girls and I quickly found our seats just in time for my phone to ring. I smiled at the caller ID: it was my sister Mandy, who I’d appointed, along with her boyfriend Wes, as babysitter for my daughter Stella.

Stella’s father was a guy my parents set me up with. We ended up having sex on the first date, conceiving Stella in the process, and I called it quits on him as soon as she was born. Why? Because he would rather have been gaming than attending such a big event as a birth. I mean, what dad-to-be in his right mind deliberately misses the birth of his first child? Right?

“Hello, Mandy?” I addressed her.

“Yeah, hi!” Mandy greeted me back. “Somebody decided to wake up early.”

I shook my head in spite of myself. Stella tends to wake up before her alarm clock turns from red to green. The color change signifies when it’s okay for Stella to get up, and I’m not sure if she ignores it genuinely because she’s an early riser or if it’s just to annoy the crap out of me. “Oh, really? What else is new?”

Mandy laughed. “I know, right?”

Mandy and I continued to chat about how Stella is doing. Apparently, when she saw Mandy in my bed instead of me, Stella went into a crying fit and constantly asked her where I was. My heart broke when I heard this, and I almost wanted to get off this plane, rush home, and give her a proper goodbye. Almost. The only thing that was holding me back was the announcement that the airplane door was closing and we needed to remain seated with our seat belts fastened.

“Put her on, would you? I’d come back to say goodbye to her and everything, but they just closed the door on the plane.”

“Aw, don’t let it break your heart. You’ll have so much fun in Korea that you’ll forget all about missing her. But yeah, I’ll put her on.”

After I had a heart-to-heart with Stella, which mostly consisted of, “Mommy, come back” and “I can’t, we’re taking off soon”, as well as other versions thereof.

“That was your sister, wasn’t it?” Kiara asked. She sat in the window seat to my right, while Lindsay sat to my left. “I heard her talking, and then Stella.”

“Yeah, she was telling me she got up early… again,” I said with a chuckle. “Oh, I hope to God she has things under control with Stella. It’s my first time going overseas without her.”

“Hey, you’ll be fine! I’m sure Jeon Jung-Kook will help you get it off your mind.” Lindsay said Jung-Kook’s name in a teasing way, as if he was going to fall for me.

And that was a massive “as if”. Jung-Kook would undoubtedly be too busy with schedules to even think about love. Not that it wouldn’t be nice if he did, but I wasn’t about to get my hopes up.

“If he falls for me and our relationship is a success, it’ll be a whole miracle.”

“Just put your trust in the Lord, sis,” Kiara advised. “He makes a way when there IS no way, remember?”

The Bible story about the parting of the Red Sea flitted through my mind. Kiara did have a point there… but I still wasn’t convinced.

“There’s a dating ban in K-pop, anyway. I highly doubt we’ll make it without him getting into a scandal, and a scandal is the last thing I want to happen to him.” Then, I thought of another thing. “And the fan wars! Imagine the inevitable fan wars!”

“If the fans ever give you hell for dating Jung-Kook, we’ve got your back – I promise!”
