There are many opinions about what the top groups are. However, the only ones we’ve come across that appear to have an objective basis are those created by the Korean Business Institute (as published in Soompi). These rankings are based on “the analysis of consumers’ participation, media coverage, interaction, and community indexes for 107,418,362 pieces of big data on about 50 girl groups.” The Korean Business Institute statistics are released monthly. Our analysis provides a broader and more balanced view by combining the monthly rankings into annual averages. As you can see from the above graphic, 11 groups have dominated the rankings for the 18 months.

The popularity of the top groups is remarkably stable. For example TWICE has ranked number one for 18 periods and number two for three periods during the time that we have maintained data for this analysis.

The popularity of the top 5 groups is remarkably stable. The lower the rank, the more variable the rank distribution becomes.

I don't understand the graphic very much but the mid tier is a complete bloodbath.
The competition among ggs has become really hard.

It's completely off, it has Iz*One 12th and that's only like the worst thing I can see that's wrong.

As far as I can understand:

1. BP and Twice are pretty much tied on first place.
2. Red velvet and Mamamoo tied in second.
3. The rise of WSJN and Lovelyz to top tier.
4. Gfriend going down...
5. And mid tier ggs are just fighting each other to death.
6. Momoland the underdog.

Not sure about SNSD's position here. I guess they're taking into account Oh GG! and the solo releases...

Agreed, for me the worst thing is to see ITZY outside of top20. Like wtf, Yeji topped another top for female idols beating Hwasa and Jennie but the group itself is not even in top20 . ITZY is def top10, maybe even top5.

Well I wouldn't pay much attention to brand rankings honestly, they aren't proven to be a reliable way to count popularity but Itzy are definitely top 10 since there are only really like 7 girl groups you can put above them being the top 5, Iz*One and Bol4.
