News Lay's Hong Kong concert has been canceled due to the protests (1 Viewer)

Due to the pro-democracy happening in Hong Kong currently ,Lay's Grandline stop there has been canceled.

Apparently it is because the safety of the fans attending can't be guaranteed, especially on the commute to and from the concert. They tried figuring out different ways to make the concert still happen, but none of those options were good enough.

His studio also released a statement saying they are against any type of speech or attempts to seperate China and basically are saying they are against the protestors. I'd like to say though that this doesn't at all say anything about Lay's own stance on these things beyond the fact that he wishes to continue to promote and perform in China!

Protests have been going on for weeks now, thousands are doing a sit in at the Hong Kong airport and all flights in and out have been canceled. China is gathering military in nearby cities.

Protestors are demanding democracy and freedom, it's assumed the protests are funded by the US, protestors ahve been seen waving american flags and even singing their hymn.

Honestly, they probably have to release statements like that or get in trouble themselves. I remember when people got mad at Chinese idols for posting about "One China" or whatever it was called but they all used the same map and basically the same script so it obviously wasn't a choice they were personally making

You really should the protesters have been very determined and creative. They've been using traffic cones to diffuse smoke bombs and lasers to prevent facial recognition on cameras.

Yeah the protesters to my knowledge have been peaceful its when they are met with police that things go bad. Also, the pro-china protesters have been violent. They've attacked people with bricks and other objects

I wouldn't be surprised if we are funding it.....but i also wonder if its symbolism?

The Revolutionary war was fought over representation and having a fair democracy which would fit what they are protesting for.

It's wise choice, China has never been good with democracy and protests and this might turn into bloodbath. Tiananmen massacre comes to mind where thousands students got executed. Really dick move from the company to make those statements, but that's Chinese companies for u. It would be better just be quiet and say you can't hold show there.

Yeah China really doesn't want any of the stuff happening in HongKong and Taiwan to make it to the mainland. They've had trouble controlling the me too movement there so citizens know how to get around censorship.

I think that announcement would have happened whether he was the ambassador or not. It's happened before that chinese celebrities in bulk release statement about them supporting china as one so I'd say it's more that he has to release that statement if he wishes to continue to promote.

I guess, but simply stating that show on HK wasn't happening cause of recent situation in the country would been neutral. Maybe even neutrality isn't allowed, but the brainwashing is quite far at that point, everyone having to repeat this mantra of one China without having a choice to even stay neutral about it.

You do realize we are talking about China... Neutrality ISN'T allowed. Especially for celebrities whose voice and words have influence.

I guess I sometimes forget how bad the situation is there. Yikes though.

Hopefully the HK protest don't result into dead count. Sometimes you have to fight for ur freedom, but often it doesn't work out and I wouldn't want to see tragedy happening.

I don't necessarily think it would have. A lot of celebs hold ambassador positions and are required to parrot the party sentiment.
