Geese are any bird of several waterfowl species, specifically in the family Anatide. Some animals named geese are not actually geese, most of them being part of the shelduck family. Goose may refer to either male or female geese, but if the word gander is used that refers to male and goose to female. Young birds are called goslings. When on the ground, a group of geese is a gaggle, when in the air in right formation it’s a plump, when just generally in the sky it’s a skein, team, or wedge.
The word goose cows from the root gahns-. In Old English this became gōs, gēs, and gandres.
Geese are monogamous, however, they only protect their territory during nesting season. Paired geese are more dominant and feed more, leading to them being more successful.
During flight, geese honk as encouragement and to maintain formation.
Fossils have been found from 10-12 million years ago. Some of those geese were as tall as 1.5 meters and were flightless.
Not all geese migrate. Those who do prepare by molting and eating food before the journey. When traveling, they fly in a v formation which allows pockets of air to ease the flight of those in the back. Typically older geese will fly in front, and younger in the back. They use the sun and moon as well as landmarks, and for orientation they use the earths magnetic field.
