For example, did you know that Hungarian isn't an Indo-European language like most big languages in Europe are? Neither are Finnish and Estonian, but those two are at least closer to each other than Hungary, though they admittedly are also not close the Ural mountains, which is where the languages originate from. There are other non Indo-European languages in Europe, but they tend to be languages that are less commonly spoken other than Turkish in Turkey (the next most common non Indo-European languages spoken aside from the mentioned include Tatar (a Turkish language), Chechen (a Northeast Caucasian language), Bashkir (a Turkish language), and Chuvash (a Turkish language), which are all Turkish in origin). It's always interesting when things like that happen.

According to Wikipedia:
Around 1000 BC, the linguistic ancestors of the Hungarians had moved southwest from their previous territories, the region west of the Ural Mountains, the eastern frontier of Europe; hence the Hungarian language separated from its closest relatives, the Ob-Ugric languages
From what I've read, it seems Proto Hungarian has a lot of influences, especially Turkish influence since they came into contact with the Turk Empire. Hungarian also has a lot of loan words (the Wiki cites examples from Iranian, Turkish and Permic (language spoken in the Ural mountains)). It's actually really intresting to read. I fucking love histo-linguistics (idk if that's the term)

Yeah, Ive heard that the ancestors moved to Hungary at the point when Indo-European language already had set roots in most of Europe, and the late movement is why Hungarian didn’t develop with Indo-European influence like it likely would if Indo-European languages had gradually become dominant while the ancestors of Hungary were living there. It does beg the question though, why did they migrate to Hungary? It’s a bit far from where they started. And why didn’t anyone who was in Europe at the time move to Hungary? There’ll always be more questions about these things, which is one reason I find them so fascinating :sanapray:
The Turkish part isn’t super surprising, all the next more common languages I listed have some Turkish influence, aside from Chechen (though Chechen might have some). It’s actually kind of wild how big of an influence Turkish has had on languages as a whole, even in areas that it may not be immediately expected, like Russia. Linguistics is so cool :ankha:

Yeah I wonder why they migrated too, it'll be lost to time though unfortunately. But I love it when threads about linguistics comes up, I get to brainstorm and be a fucking nerd.

Well coming from a Hungarian , noone really knows why we migrated here. In fact for years it was just tales about our ancestors following dreams of a better land, and in one of them buying the land we live on now for a white horse. (But let:s be real...)
A_magyarok_vandorlasa.jpg

Linguists have been trying to find the origin of our ancestors for a long time. Hungarians as a nation of their own have been mentioned back in the 800 hundreds as nomadic ppl, often hired as warriors for other lords to fight eachother until they gained enough population to be recognized and feared as their own. Our language has been influenced while traveling with other nomadic nations, from our neighbours (dacs who will become the today romanians, slavic nations), from the introduction of Christianity and Latin, from being invaded by Turkish ppl, from the Austro Hungarian Empire etc.

For the REASON? Well that is up to debate. Well we weren't the only nations to travel in so many numbers , but they presume we did cause food was scarce for our animals and land was even scarcer. So basically while other nations fought over land our people were like "let's go see what's over that mountain instead"

It is still a question why our nation's language is still so different from other languages and how come it didn't assimilate with other ones. I presume cause we were so stubborn xD. As u guys said we still have a lot of borrowed words tho. Johann Gottfried von Herder said that Hungarian would disappear in 100 years amongst the other slavic languages. This was well over 100 years ago and we are still here, so?

That’s pretty interesting. There’s so much stuff in history that we really don’t know and may never know. I don’t know who Johann Gottfried von Herder was (I presume an Austrian?) but he undoubtedly was very wrong :sanapray:

Ok so let me explain better. I am Hungarian, born in Romania. But the Hungarian government allows us to have double citizenship if we have Hungarian ancestry. And we can also vote in both countries.
