Ok so let me explain better. I am Hungarian, born in Romania. But the Hungarian government allows us to have double citizenship if we have Hungarian ancestry. And we can also vote in both countries.
That’s interesting, I’ve only ever heard of Israel giving citizenship due to descent before, unless you mean having one or two parents who are Hungarian citizens. That I’ve heard of, and ig it’s due to descent also, but when you say by descent it made me think of grandparents or more :scree:

Both my parents are hungarians, so are my grandparents. I presume most of my relatives also. The part where i live, used to be part of the Hungarian kingdom. After the peace treaty of Trianon more parts were given to different countries, so we became minorities in those countries. Years later Hungary recognizes these minorities as hungarian citizens, IF the persons have the necessary documents and ancestry. You can read more about the treaty here

This is the former look of Hungary before 1920.

Oh okay, that makes sense. The situation in which someone is born in areas formerly part of another country is interesting, I never really thought about it for that perspective

Yeah it is. It's still a sour subject for us, cuz both nations were fighting for territory for long. Cultural differences also ... Don't help. But most people are kind and peaceful nowadays. A fun story about this was when i applied for hun citizenship during college with my whole family. My romanian friend asked me "But u still gonna be a romanian, right?" XDD It was just funny, but i understood her confusion.

To be fair, countries where you can’t hold more than one citizenship exist, so if Hungary or Romania were one of those it’s a valid question :scree: Germany for example only allows multiple citizenships for people who are citizens of former Soviet countries currently as far as I know, and Japan, China, and South Korea forbid more than one outright. But even then it would depend on their view of nationality, some wouldn’t consider a permanent resident as being from that country even if they don’t have citizen status, while to others both permanent residents and citizens count as being from that country. I feel like in the US there’s plenty of people that consider all of them Americans, but also a lot who only view citizens as Americans.

It can be quite complicated. From what I've read, it seems like in South Korea, children may carry multiple citizenships at birth. Once they become adults, it sounds like the males need to pick between a Korean citizenship or the other(s). But it seems like a female dual citizen can keep both citizenships. But in her case she'd need to register for a dual citizenship for life before her 22nd birthday, meaning that she can no longer renouce her Korean citizenship at any point. So many rules and stuff for different countries, its a lot :ono:

Yeah i heard of that. Cuz if they choose one citizenship over korean they dont have to do military service. That's how i think one celebrity got out of doing it but then was banned from Korea or stmh, i dont remember.
