Chapter 1

Molly Barlow hummed as she carefully decorated a “welcome home” cake for a military wife to give to her returning husband. The woman had asked for a white cake with vanilla frosting, with a flower design around the edges in blue icing and “Welcome Home, Max” in the center in red icing.

She was almost done with the writing when her boss, Annette, called her to the front. “A customer is here to pick up his cake!”

“Can you tell them to wait a moment?” Molly called back. “I’m just about done with Mrs. Phillips’ cake.”

“Okay!” Annette agreed.

As soon as the cake was finished, Molly stored it in the fridge for when Mrs. Phillips would come to pick it up. Then, she washed her hands and came out to the front.

Standing on the other side of the counter was a tall, very hot man with shaggy blond hair and a goatee. A hint of an arm tattoo peeked out from underneath his right jacket sleeve.

When he saw the brunette walking his way, couldn’t help but flirt. She was petite and thin with an elongated face, rounded jawline, and light brown eyes much like two almonds. He could tell she felt the same, too, because she gave him a flirty smile.

“Hello,” he flirted back. “I’m picking up an order under Clifford.”

“Clayford?” the woman guessed. She couldn’t fully understand his accent.

Michael shook his head. “Nah, Clifford – you know, the big red dog? Sorry, I’m from Australia and have an accent.”

Molly nodded in understanding. “Oh, Clifford! Okay, I’ll have that right out for you. What’s it look like?”

“It’s small and round with ‘Happy Birthday, Lua’ on it. It should also have figurines of Alice and the Cheshire Cat on the top.”

“Okay, sure thing!”

Molly went to the fridge and quickly found what Mr. Clifford was looking for. However, instead of “Happy Birthday, Lua”, it said “Happy Birthday, Luna”. She guessed her coworker Joyce, who has a hearing impairment from old age, had decorated it, but she wasn’t going to point fingers. Instead, she’d simply apologize for the misspelling and hope her customer accepts it.

“Hey, Mr. Clifford,” Molly said. “This is the one you ordered, right? It looks like it says Luna instead of Lua… sorry about that.”

“It’s alright… wee error.” Michael winked before he continued. “You can just call me Michael, by the way, darling. What’s your name?”

“I’m Molly,” Molly flirted back. “It’s nice to meet you. Tell your daughter I said happy birthday!”

“I sure will! Thank you again, sweetie.”

Molly laughed. “Are you sure you should be flirting when you’re already taken?”

“Oh, I’m single; my ex-fiancée and I broke up last year. When do you get off work? I can take you out tonight.”

“I get off at four, but then I have to get my kids from school and help them with their homework. I’m a single mom of three, so I’m always so busy during the week.”

“Ah, okay. Tomorrow night?”

“Sure! I can get a babysitter usually within 24 hours, so this is perfect. You can pick me up at six.” She wrote her address on the back of Michael’s receipt before handing it to him. “Here’s your receipt and my address. Have a great rest of your day!”

“Thank you, I will.”

Michael’s next task was to put the cake in his fridge, wake Lua up from her nap, and then pick up his parents from the airport. They’d also requested that he take them out for lunch, which he was more than happy to do.

When he got home with the cake and a few other food items, Michael found Luke and his pregnant wife Sierra snuggling on the couch. Luke was singing softly to the baby inside of her while rubbing her 20-week belly.

Luke and Sierra’s marriage had been kept a secret since their January wedding day because Luke didn’t want fans of his band, 5 Seconds of Summer, to crash the wedding or otherwise bother him on his special day. The announcement had come in tandem with the pregnancy announcement three months ago. “Yes, I’m married to the love of my life – and she’s pregnant!” Luke had posted on Instagram underneath a picture of them holding ultrasound photos.

“How’s little Mikey?” Michael teased.

“Michael, we are not naming him after you!” Luke scolded. “Fans will be too confused if we do that.”

“Well, what name did you have in mind, then?” Michael challenged.

“We’re thinking something with meaning,” Sierra said.

“So? Michael has a meaning!” At Luke’s and Sierra’s blank stares, he added, “Just saying.”

When he got to Lua’s nursery, she was already sitting up in her crib.

“Hey, almost birthday girl,” Michael greeted her as he lifted her out of the crib. “Are you ready to go get Nunna and Pappa?”

“Dada,” Lua said.

Michael laughed. “No, not Dada – that’s me. Say ‘Nunna’!”

“Dada!”

Lua put her hands against Michael’s goatee and cooed, deciding she liked the texture.

“Aw, you like Dada’s beard? You like Dada’s beard, huh?”

Michael selected two outfits from her closet at random. Ne outfit was her lavender ruffled t-shirt and purple skirt, and the other was a plain pink pinstriped shirt and jeans; he placed both of them on her dresser. “Would you like to wear this one or that one today?” Lua decided not to answer and continued to caress his goatee. “Hi, sweetheart. I think Nunna likes you best in the first outfit. What do you think?”

Lua giggled and clapped.

“Okay, the ruffled top and skirt it is, then.”

It was an hour’s drive to LAX, but as soon as he pulled up to the airport pickup area, Michael saw Karen and Daryl standing there in anticipation. Michael honked and flashed his headlights to get their attention.

“Mum, Dad!” Michael cried when he got out to greet them with hugs. “How was the flight?”

“It was long,” Karen said, “but absolutely worth it because we get to see our granddaughter on her first birthday!”

“Do you have Lua with you?” Daryl asked.

“Yes, she is, and she’s very ready to see you two,” Michael said.

Daryl climbed into the front passenger’s seat while Karen selected a seat in the back next to Lua. “Hello, my darling!” she cooed. “It’s your Nunna! Can you say ‘Nunna’?”

“Dada!” Lua chirped. Michael laughed at this.

“It’s the only word she knows so far – that and ‘hot’. I guess you could say she knows how to say, ‘hot dada’.”

“Son, you’re more smiley than you’ve been lately,” Daryl remarked. “Did you finally meet a girl?”

Michael kept his eyes on the road. “I was going to surprise you at lunch, but yes; her name is Molly. She waited on me when I went to pick up Lua’s cake.”

“Oh, really?” Karen asked. “Congratulations! Did you ask her out?”

“Yeah, I’m picking her up tomorrow night. I’m going to let her choose where we go, though.”

“That’s very considerate of you, Michael. I hope it goes well.”

“Oh, I’m sure it will. When I flirted with her, I’m pretty sure she flirted back.”

“Oh, sounds like a match made in heaven!” Daryl commented. “This is exactly how it went when I met your mother… well, minus the cake thing, but you get the idea.”
