Amazon Japan announced today that an original live-action film featuring Daisuke Jigen, Lupin's partner in the Lupin the Third franchise, will start streaming worldwide on Amazon Prime beginning October 13, 2023. This is a collaboration project between Amazon Studios and TMS Entertainment, the anime production company that has produced the Lupin the Third anime franchise since 1971.
Tetsuji Tamayama, who played Daisuke Jigen in the 2014 live-action film, reprises the role nine years later. A key visual (featured above) and a teaser trailer featuring him was also released.
Lupin the Third is a manga series created by Monkey Punch, which has been popular in Japan and worldwide for over 50 years. The manga started serialization in 1967, followed by the first TV anime series in 1971. Since then, numerous TV specials, spin-off OVAs, and films have been produced. Amzaon's Jigen Daisuke will be the third live-action film in the franchise.
The story of Jigen Daisuke begins when Jigen feels his beloved Combat Magnum (S&W M19) is not working well, and visits Japan for the first time in several years in search of the "world's best gunsmith" who runs a watch shop.
Hajime Hashimoto, who has worked on many popular Japanese TV drama series such as AIBOU: Tokyo Detective Duo and The Woman of Science Research Institute, serves as director on an original screenplay by Yoshimasa Akamatsu.
