You would think that with him being from Canada he would still know the meaning behind that awful ass shirt.

I hope he doesn’t try to pull the “I didn’t know” excuse either because I sure as hell won’t buy it

From the apology, it seems he did not try to go that route but rather, oops I was just thinking it was fine cause vintage.

I know it is a Virginia state official merchandise, like sold to tourists but .... MARK... NO.
The confederate flag isnt tourist merch.
Any establishment, especially from the Southern states, selling and representing the confederate flag are sending a clear message.
Especially with the current political tensions and divide in the US, the confederate flag represents an ugly group of people.

Also, this is what Virgina's state flag looks like. Besides Mark's ignorance, whatever establishment sold that shirt knew what they were doing.

In case I word things poorly, just saying that I’m not disagreeing just adding on :haylul:

It was originally the battle flag of northern Virginia (and Tennessee). It was certainly never the flag of Virginia, nor the confederacy (though it was included as a part of some national confederate flags). And it wasn’t particularly big during the civil war, given that it was a regional battle flag. Unfortunately, the fact that it was a battle flag rather than a political flag let southerners claim that it wasn’t related to the politics of succession because it was “totally just a soldier banner”.

Even then, it died out very quickly, and only became commonly seen in the mid 1900s when it was adopted specifically as a symbol of pro segregation policies. And that’s when it became truly popular. Before that, it was pretty niche. So even though it technically started as something related to Virginia in particular, it didn’t even become common until nearly a century later, and when it was readopted it was adopted as an explicit anti civil rights and pro segregation symbol. And as much as some want to claim that it’s just a “southern heritage” flag, you don’t “accidentally” make a shirt with that flag for tourists without wanting to spread a confederate agenda.

I'm not Canadian, so not to be all "America is the center of the galaxy actually" but... don't our Northern neighbors know that the Confederate flag is associated with modern day racism and hate?

There are some stuff where it's like, okay, I don't necessarily expect this idol who grew up in rural South Korea to know the intricacies of why they have stumbled into this offense, but a Canadian who grew up there until he was 13 (per Google) is like... It's hard to believe his sole thought was "what a neat vintage shirt!"

:pepeslippy:Plus, that ugly group of people are choosing to use the nazi symbol and salute alongside this flag. They're reviving controversial symbols for their hate. It's absolutely nuts for any of it be represented as "merch."

I don’t know if and how much Canada is taught about US history. Before Canada became Canada, thousands of them did volunteer to fight in America’s civil war, mostly for the union and volunteers came from both the British and French sides. Idr how the French felt about the war but the British wanted to remain neutral so they really were volunteers o.o

He probably did learn something about it as the shirt is pretty ugly so I feel subconsciously he recognised it but personally I wouldn't trust a child to hang on to the significance of this kind of information as history especially is usually a subject people either are deeply interested in or bored of entirely.

I say this as someone who was interested in learning in history and still is to this day but there was also subjects that I didn't care about and barely could remember after leaving school and while people might hate to think a topic as sensitive as this could be one history is one of the highest for this.

When I said official merch, I meant something stores sell in the state as a take home goodie thing.
I was meaning the sleeve says "Virginia" and there are many places store wise, not owned by the state which still have merchandise with the flag, as disgraceful as it is, available on it. So while the government body of the state may disagree, stores in the area which people visit for keepsakes, sell them, and people can still buy shirts with the garbage on it.
