This will be the final thread. In this thread I’ll talk about the impact of the song “Maryland, My Maryland”, mostly during the time of the US Civil War, mostly in the Confederacy as well. Though the Union did make their own version of the song, as was common at that time.

Overall, the song “Maryland, My Maryland” was very popular in the South. In fact, some people in the confederacy wanted the song to be the Confederate anthem, and overall it was one of the most prominent Confederate songs of the war.

In Maryland itself, the song was very polarizing. In some regions, specifically regions with strong confederate sympathies, the Confederate version was popular. However, in pro Union regions, this was not the case. Robert E. Lee famously ordered his soldiers to sing the song while traveling through Fredrick, Maryland to try to gain sympathy and support for the Confederate cause, but this was met a cold response from the staunchly pro Union Marylanders.

In the modern day it’s safe to say that it’s still polarizing, but the confederate version isn’t the most popular. Particularly since Maryland did eventually remove it as their anthem without even having a replacement, after 10 attempts since 1974. There was some opposition to the change. This was usually either because people didn’t think it was worth spending effort on the change, or because people viewed it as “political correctness”. This is despite the fact that many people in the senate and house on both sides politically ultimately voted to get rid of it.
