The last part of the lyrics thread for Marylands wild state anthem. Il do one more to talk about the impact of the song at the time. Past threads on this topic are linked below :sanapray:

Here are the full lyrics of the song from Marylands government site. I’m also posting a video of the song if you prefer that.
*Note, when singing the song, the lines of the song that just say Maryland! are replaced with Maryland, my Maryland to maintain the rhythm. I’ll go stanza by stanza and get rid the Maryland My Maryland parts in the analysis

I
The despot's heel is on thy shore,
Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
Maryland!
Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
Maryland! My Maryland!

II
Hark to an exiled son's appeal,
Maryland!
My Mother State! to thee I kneel,
Maryland!
For life or death, for woe or weal,
Thy peerless chivalry reveal,
And gird thy beauteous limbs with steel,
Maryland! My Maryland!

III
Thou wilt not cower in the dust,
Maryland!
Thy beaming sword shall never rust,
Maryland!
Remember Carroll's sacred trust,
Remember Howard's warlike thrust,-
And all thy slumberers with the just,
Maryland! My Maryland!

IV
Come! 'tis the red dawn of the day,
Maryland!
Come with thy panoplied array,
Maryland!
With Ringgold's spirit for the fray,
With Watson's blood at Monterey,
With fearless Lowe and dashing May,
Maryland! My Maryland!

V
Come! for thy shield is bright and strong,
Maryland!
Come! for thy dalliance does thee wrong,
Maryland!
Come to thine own anointed throng,
Stalking with Liberty along,
And sing thy dauntless slogan song,
Maryland! My Maryland!

VI
Dear Mother! burst the tyrant's chain,
Maryland!
Virginia should not call in vain,
Maryland!
She meets her sisters on the plain-
Sic semper! 'tis the proud refrain
That baffles minions back amain,
Maryland!
Arise in majesty again,
Maryland! My Maryland!

VII
I see the blush upon thy cheek,
Maryland!
For thou wast ever bravely meek,
Maryland!
But lo! there surges forth a shriek,
From hill to hill, from creek to creek,
Potomac calls to Chesapeake,
Maryland! My Maryland!

VIII
Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll,
Maryland!
Thou wilt not crook to his control,
Maryland!
Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the shot, the blade, the bowl,
Than crucifixion of the Soul,
Maryland! My Maryland!

IX
I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland!
The Old Line bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! She spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! She burns! She'll come! She'll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!

I see the blush upon thy cheek-likely implying that Maryland (personified as a woman) was upset about Union occupation
For thou wast ever bravely meek- Probably referencing that Maryland didn’t immediately jump to be a Union state or Confederate state
But lo! there surges forth a shriek, From hill to hill, from creek to creek- Saying that now it’s too much and the state is offended at what the Union has done
Potomac calls to Chesapeake- The two major rivers of the state, personifying it to say that even nature is calling for secession

Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll- Vandal is Lincoln, the toll is the soldiers he called up to put down the confederacy
Thou wilt not crook to his control- Crook means bow, him is still Lincoln
Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the shot, the blade, the bowl- Here he argues that Maryland would be better of suffering the destruction of war (fire, shot, and blade are straightforward parts of war, cup could be poison or death)
Than crucifixion of the Soul- Here he says that it’s better to face physical danger and death than spiritual death. He implies that if Maryland goes with the Union it’s a betrayal of its identity and soul. And bringing up crucifixion is a way to make the confederacy implied as the morally and religiously right side.

I hear the distant thunder-hum-
the distant hum of war, probably meaning the confederacy approaching
The Old Line bugle, fife, and drum- Old line is a nickname for Maryland regiments, dating back to the Revolutionary war. Those instrument were used in war
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb- Saying that Maryland hasn’t given in or given up at the thought of joining the confederacy
Huzza! She spurns the Northern scum!- No hidden meanings here :haylul:
She breathes! She burns! She'll come! She'll come!- Giving dramatic suspense, this guy really wanted Maryland to secede. If that wasn’t clear yet.
And then ending with “Maryland, my Maryland” ofc

that song having almost 10k views is crazy like does it mean there are people who suddenly go "yeah let me put maryland, my maryland on" in the middle of their day :jisoosmh:
Tbh that’s not a lot of views when it comes to songs that are historical or political in some way. I don’t think many people put on the Star Spangled Banner to jam to while they work in their office but the first result that comes up on YouTube is a lyric video with 44 million views :lisalaugh: And if that’s too easily explained away because the US is way too in everyone’s business, there’s also a lyric video for the imperial Russian anthem from the early 1800s that lasted less than 20 years, and that video has 58k views. And that anthem is just God Save the King with even more boring lyrics.

Also a lot of confederate veterans basically made a pro confederate religion centered around the belief of the Lost Cause. And to this day there are people who subscribe to those views, and are passionate about the war.
