Yes this is finally happening! I talk about my chickens so much I think it’s only right that you get to know them a bit and fall in love with them like I have.

To begin we currently have a flock with 10 chickens, 8 hens and 2 roosters. We did at one point have 11, but unfortunately about a month ago one of our hens, Little Red passed away. I’ve made a few threads about her and thought it would be nice for you all to learn about her as well since she was such a big part of our chicken family. So here we go:
Little Red (passed away)
Little Red was part of our very first set of chickens, she was a Rhode Island Red hen and got her name because she was the smallest of the bunch and… Red
However as she got older and more confident it became a very great way to describe this extremely fiery and fearsome beast. She did not like people stepping into her territory and was one of the few chickens that I’ve ever been scared of. We would often call her the “Mighty Red” when she got extra territorial. Like with all of our hens we let them live out their lives with us once they’ve stopped laying (we don’t use any of our chickens for meat, the girls supply us eggs, the boys protect them and as the girls grow older they can pass down their chicken knowledge to the youngins). About six months ago or so Little Red began showing signs of her old age catching up to her (her particular breed only lives to be about 5-8 years, she was 5). Her personality did an entire 180, she wasn’t necessarily sweet but she didn’t have the energy to go after us anymore and was just in general very laidback. It was a bittersweet experience tbh because it’s nice to not have to worry about her attacking but it meant that her fiery spirit was fading and so we really cherished her last few months. She allowed us to pet her and we spoiled her lots with puddles in the heat (she loved playing in puddles) and turned on the heat lamp early for her as it got colder so she wouldn’t be uncomfortable at night. It’s honestly really weird without her.
Now to our current flock:
Cayenne (Oldest hen)
Horrible picture but anyways, Cayenne is our last remaining chicken from our first set. She’s around 6 years old. A very cute Australorp. Cayenne is very shy around people and really just prefers alone time than hanging around the main flock. She was very close with Little Red so I think she’s still trying to get used to her not being around. She is a drama free lady, when the younger chickens get into scuffles over food or are just being extra crazy she quickly makes her exit. Her favorite place is underneath the big bush in their run (behind her in the pic).
Pollo (hen)
This big, round, chunky, beautiful girl is Pollo (means chicken in Spanish). She’s very sweet and is around 3 or 4 years old now. She’s taken the younger hens under her wing and she acts like a very chill mama to them. Pollo is our “top hen” so she is the lady in charge but she’s actually quite gentle to the others when putting them in their place (unless we give her corn on the cob, then the rest better run or else she gets a little protective of her favorite treat.)
The rest of the chickens are the youngest ones, they’re all around 8 months old. This is the group of chicks that I raised myself. They were kept in my room for the first 7 weeks of their life and became relatively attached to me. Their first few nights outside were difficult for them because they always slept in an enclosure where they would get as close to me as they could. The girls still seem to gravitate towards me more than anyone else which makes me happy
Millie (Hen)
One of our sweetest chickens, Millie. She has a very pretty coloring to her and is a major foodie whose constantly looking for that perfect roundness. Despite her chunkiness she’s very active and loves to do laps in the morning with her signature waddles. She loves pets and hanging around people. A big social butterfly. She was one of the chicks we worried about transitioning over to outside. We at first introduced her outside in the catio that has grass and dirt for her to explore. She would either stay in between my feet the entire time or hide under the cat’s scratch post because she was comfortable with furniture, but not with dirt
. She’s more confident now but she is at the bottom of the pecking order so that does mean she gets picked on more. She has a very lovely personality and hangs out with Pollo the most.
Hey Hey (Rooster)
I believe the spelling is supposed to be Hei Hei, but this fits him better because I always have to yell at him to stop getting into things he shouldn’t be getting into. Hey Hey is one of our roosters and is the more “aggressive” one, although I would just say he’s more protective than his brother. He was very sweet before puberty hit then his rooster instincts kicked in. He leaves us alone once we give him grubs and as long as we don’t step in between him and one of the hens. His attempts are also usually almost always unsuccessful, both of our boys are quite small and they just act big and tough but in reality they weigh less than our hens.
A quick shoe stopping him in his tracks or making ourselves look bigger always leaves him baffled. He’s a little stupid ngl (I mean that with love). Roosters will show their hens what’s safe to eat (They’ll make a specific noise and show whatever they have to the others) but he and his brother will show the girls a random twig and the girls are just like-
He’s also the only rooster I’ve ever seen be openly protective of the eggs, he’ll create nesting spots and I always have to make sure he’s no where near me when I collect the eggs or he’ll go after me.
Velvet (hen)
Velvet is a very even tempered girl and basically a very good example of a “beginner’s hen”. She’s quite friendly but doesn’t like to be handled anymore which is fine. She still likes to hang out and tries her best to get a ride on our backs but she’s just a little too big for that now. Wherever Cotton or one of the Penny’s are (other hens), she’s close by. She’s actually really similar to Cayenne though when it comes to not wanting to be involved in the drama. I hope that as she gets older her and Cayenne will become buddies so they can keep each other company.
