This imo is the best post of this thread! A well thought out analogy of each group you have mentioned.Purely on the basis of talent:
Dreamcatcher - While watching recent music shows, it was not lost on me both how good they are, as well as how disappointingly low the level of local support they receive in SK is, although I pretty much knew this already. Siyeon is a terrific main vocal and the most stable live voice I heard from any group currently promoting, including ones with far less demanding choreo; Dami is an incredibly underrated rapper, in large part because DC's style isn't necessarily the best or most flexible for showcasing rap skills; they are among the best dancers overall as a group; and they are one of very few ggs that always has good to great styling, even when their concept could easily take them into some horrific mashup of emo goth and Hot Topic. If there's such a thing as a group deserving more than it gets, DC should be at the top of the list, but I don't see Korea waking up to them while they stick with their current sound.
Sonamoo - Another disgustingly underrated group with not one but two stellar main vocals, great lead vocals, and one great rapper (and one decent one). They've suffered from typically poor management and promotion by TS, including fairly drastic concept changes from the start, which are seldom well-received. There's been more consistency in their sound through the first two Happy Box releases, so hopefully that continues through their next comeback, which is unfortunately timed to coincide with some of the most anticipated comebacks of the year, so I don't see them moving the needle any more than usual, which is to say, not at all, regardless of how good their song actually is.
Ladies' Code - Sojung has one of my favorite voices in all of kpop, although I'd honestly rather hear her doing something like indie pop or r&b (her Stay Here/Crystal Clear solo release of last year being a good indication of how that would sound). At least then she'd be putting out music instead of sitting on a shelf collecting dust in Polaris's dungeon. Of course, all three ladies are very talented and managed to be among the one or two artists who actually put out a tolerably listenable holiday song this past December, but the frequency of their releases since returning as a trio has been as disappointing as those few releases have been great, and it seems that Polaris just doesn't quite know what to do with them.
Gugudan - Also a far more talented group than the average gg fare, and with a potential for stage presence and live performance that is even rarer than raw talent. Like Sonamoo, they are victims of drastic concept changes that leave fans with no idea what to expect from comeback to comeback, despite a fairly consistent level of quality. That they've managed to sell decently well for a group that struggles for validation in other metrics is a testament to Sejeong's popularity and appeal, but there's only so long that that will be able to carry them to low mid-tier status. On the plus side, if any of these four groups can pull a national hit out of nowhere and completely reverse the curse of post-I.O.I mediocrity they seem to be destined for, I would put my money on Gugudan.
Love it!
