This was over Christmas break, when my family was gathered together. I don’t remember how we got on the topic, but we decided to quiz my brother (2 years younger than me) about history. We asked him if he knew who Harriet Tubman was. He thinks and says, “she helped give women the right to vote?”. We all start laughing and my mom says “come on, even I know that the woman who helped give American women the right to vote was that lady who didn’t give up her seat on the bus!”. And then we laugh harder because now it’s not just wrong, but it’s confidently wrong.

For those who don’t know, Harriet Tubman was an important conductor of the Underground Railroad, which helped enslaved people escape to freedom. The woman who helped American women have the right to vote is Susan B Anthony. And the woman who “didn't give up her seat on the bus” is Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks actually wasn’t even born until after Susan B Anthony had died, so that would’ve impressive to be the person who did both things. Rosa Parks was also a only 6 years old when the amendment giving American women the right to vote was passed But now they know who’s who and that’s what counts.
