Since Criminal Minds Evolution is labeled as Season 16, I will call this a new season.
First of all, I have to get used to the fact that the characters get to curse more often since is on a streaming service. The blood and gore don't surprise me considering that was how the first 15 seasons were (more on the tame side).
This season is starting off pretty strong and we get to see more personal scenes for each character, aside from when they are trying to solve a case. It feels weird that we see the cast solving cases separately than together due to some changes in the BAU. I liked the small acknowledgment that Agent Simmons and Dr. Reid are on assignments as well (even though their actors didn't return for this season). Also, the idea of the BAU being in the same situation with the team "breaking up" reminds me of what happened in Season 13 with Linda Barnes.
This season is showing how the pandemic has affected the BAU when it comes to solving these crimes and capturing serial killers. During the 2 years of the pandemic, a network of killers with different MO, but they follow the same orders from the actual Unsub.

It was towards the end of the first episode when it revealed that Krystall (Rossi's 3rd wife who he married at the end of Season 14) died a year ago.
