Believe it or not, it’s the same in my country. If I act on self defense, but I seriously injure the attacker/robber or k*ll them somehow while I try to protect myself, I will be the one who goes to jail. So basically, I can do nothing. We have such amazing laws.

It's the same with most self defense laws that if they consider you used excessive force in the situation like say someone breaks into your home unarmed and you beat them unconscious with a weapon then that won't be looked upon favourably but if they get aggressive with you especially armed then you are more likely to get away with it as self defense.
