Nana has spoken out about the recent controversy surrounding her appearance in the Netflix drama The Scandal.

The singer-turned-actress chatted with fans on a communication platform and addressed criticism about her lips in the drama on September 22nd.

“If my lips made viewers uncomfortable, that’s my fault,” Nana said. “It seems that my personal choice wasn’t appropriate for an actress.” She appeared to accept the criticism and reflected on how her appearance affected viewers.

“I imagine it must be painful for my fans to see me receive harsh comments,” she added. “I’m sorry about that. I’ll work hard so that we can hear more positive things together in the future.”

Since The Scandal premiered on September 18th, some viewers have questioned whether Nana had gotten lip fillers, with comments saying that her lips looked too exaggerated for a historical drama.

The criticism focused on her role as Ahn Hee Yeon, a virtuous widow who has remained faithful to her late husband for many years. Some viewers felt that Nana’s appearance did not fit the character.

At a press conference for The Scandal on September 9th, Nana explained why she chose the role. She said she had been a longtime fan of director Jung Ji Woo and became interested in the project after hearing about the idea of remaking the original story as a historical drama.

Nana also said she was confident she could bring Ahn Hee Yeon to life.

The Scandal is an eight-episode historical romance starring Son Ye Jin, Ji Chang Wook and Nana. The story follows Madam Jo (played by Son Ye Jin), a talented woman who makes a bet with Joseon’s most sought-after matchmaker, Jo Won (Ji Chang Wook). Ahn Hee Yeon (Nana) becomes caught up in their relationship.

Nana debuted as a member of After School and has focused on acting since 2016. She gained praise for her performance in the 2023 Netflix series Mask Girl and is set to appear in the film Omniscient Reader: The Prophet alongside Ahn Hyo Seop. She will also star in an upcoming Netflix drama tentatively titled Materesa with Kim Dan, though its release date has not yet been announced.

You know, it's nice to see a response that isn't pretending they didn't get cosmetic enhancements and is taking the criticism in stride.

I haven't seen The Scandal, so not commenting on how Nana does in that, but it's always frustrating when actors' cosmetic changes like, prevent you from being able to fully buy into the story that's being told.
