Chapter 7: Lucky

The date went surprisingly well for Taylor, considering this was her first time and all. She and Luke found that they had a lot in common, and they kept the conversation going the whole way through.

As they were walking out, Taylor heard some rustling in one of the bushes that flanked the entrance. When Taylor stopped to see what would happen next, Luke pulled her along.

“C’mon, Taylor,” he said. “It’s just the paparazzi.”

Taylor heard a plaintive whine coming from the bush, leading her to assume Luke was wrong.

“No, I think it’s a dog,” she said, breaking free to return to the bush. “Last time I checked, paparazzi didn’t make whiny dog noises.”

Luke sighed but decided to join her. Taylor pulled back the branches to see what was inside. Sure enough, a Lab-looking dog was huddled up on its haunches, shaking with fear. The dog’s fur wasn’t a solid color like a Lab’s, though; it was chocolate brown with a white streak down its belly.

Taylor tried to get it to come, but it didn’t budge. All it did was bare its teeth and nip at the intruder.

“Baby, don’t be scared,” Luke consoled. “We’re here to help you.”

This time, the dog bolted out of the bush and towards the parking lot.

“Luke, do something!” Taylor shrieked when she saw an incoming car. “There’s a car coming!”

Luke let out a beckoning whistle, but the dog still didn’t listen. The car almost ran over the poor thing, but luckily for the dog, it screeched to a halt right in front of him.

Taylor saw a man get out of the driver’s seat and greet the couple.

“Need a leash and collar for that dog?” he asked. “My wife and I were just coming here for dinner after we had to put our dog down, so we have one you can use.”

Taylor frowned. “Oh, I’m sorry for your loss. Are you sure, though?”

“Yeah, we don’t believe in holding onto the past.”

“How very kind of you, sir,” Luke complimented the man. The man opened the back car door and produced a spiked red collar and a long, red leash.

“Here you go,” he said as he handed Taylor the items. “Want me to help you catch him?”

Taylor and Luke agreed to this, and the three of them spent the next five minutes chasing down the dog. Eventually, the dog jumped over the barricade the separated the parking lot from the road. She gasped and tried to run, but Luke held her back.

“We’ll get him. Just wait in the car.”

From the safety of Luke’s car, Taylor watched as the dog ran into the traffic. Meanwhile, Luke and the other man dodged cars left and right until they eventually caught up with the dog on the other side of the road. By this point, her heart was pounding with fear for the dog and for Luke.

“Man!” Luke breathed as he put the dog in the back and climbed into the driver’s seat. “If his name isn’t Lucky, it should be!”

Taylor heaved a sigh of relief. “Thank God you caught him! You scared me when you were running into that traffic.”

“I’ll bet not as much as I would’ve been if you’d been in my shoes,” Luke said with a smile. “Let’s get him to a vet. Which vet does Sunny go to?”

Taylor named the vet clinic and gave him their number to call. When he did, they told him he could be seen right away and gave him directions from Vinny’s.

“Are you going to keep him?” Luke asked Taylor when he got off the phone.

“I don’t know,” Taylor said. “This is kind of short notice to be bringing a stray dog into my house.”

“Well, I certainly can’t take him, what with the band being on tour right now. Call your parents and see what they say.”

She took her phone and did just that. Martha answered the call with, “Hey, hon. How’s the date going?”

“Oh, it’s going great!” Taylor mused. “Um… so, we picked up a stray dog, and Luke says he can’t take him. Is Sunny good with other dogs?”

“A stray dog,” Martha repeated with emphasis on “stray”. “Is he friendly?”

“We don’t know yet, but we’re taking him to the vet as we speak.”

“Okay. Make sure they do a behavioral assessment before you bring him in. I don’t want him coming to my house and making a mess out of Sunny.”

Taylor was confused now. What did that have to do with anything? “What do you mean by that?”

“Taylor, let me tell you a story.”

Taylor listened intently as Martha went into a story about how she’d brought in a stray dog when she was little. The new dog didn’t get along with their other dog at all, and they ended up rehoming him, to make a long story short.

“Martha, I’m sure it’ll be fine,” Taylor reassured her. “Please, can we take him?”

Martha sighed. She still wasn’t keen on bringing in a second dog, especially if it was a stray… but then, Taylor had said something about wanting her own pet. She took so long to think about it that Taylor felt compelled to ask if she was still on the line.

“If he passes the assessment, and that will include how she interacts with other dogs, then yes, you can keep him. But do some research on socializing new pets, too. We’re willing to help, but at the end of the day, it is your dog.”

Taylor was satisfied with this answer. Not exactly happy because she hated research projects, but she was satisfied nonetheless.

“So, Lucky is a stray,” the vet tech informed Luke and Taylor, using the name Taylor had given him. “He’s 100% healthy, though – just really shaken up from his ordeal, and very hungry.”

“Oh, I’ll bet!” Taylor agreed.

“And we want to keep him overnight for the behavioral assessment.”

“This assessment includes how he interacts with other dogs, correct?” Luke asked.

The lady nodded. “Yes. We do that with every stray dog that comes in, as well as his attitudes towards children, strangers, and so on. Is there a good number we can call when he’s ready to go home?”

Luke gave her his cell phone number, and she sent them on their way.

Chapter 8: A Second Date

“I don’t suppose you want to see me again,” Taylor said when Luke dropped her off.

“As a matter of fact,” Luke said, bouncing his eyebrows up and down, “I do want to see you again. You’re a great girl, Taylor. I’m surprised you haven’t been on more dates!”

“Well, I’ve been moved all over Georgia for the last ten years. How could I possibly hold a relationship?”

Luke gave that winsome smile she always saw in pictures. Except this time, it was even more so because she was looking at the real thing. “Well, you’re here for good, aren’t you? And why are you doubting my intentions?”

“Well, I don’t know,” Taylor said. “I guess I just didn’t know what to expect.”

“Yeah, this question usually comes up after the first date if it goes as well as ours did. And after this first date, I would love to get to know you better.”

“Oh, thank you. I’ve seen this stuff in romcoms before, but you know…”

Luke nodded. “Yeah, I get you. Oh, and then they also discuss the second date. That is, if you’re willing.”

“Am I!” Taylor gushed. “What are you thinking?”

“I was thinking an ice cream date at Cold Rocks.” When Taylor quirked an eyebrow, Luke added, “Cold Stone. You know, the ice cream parlor?”

“Oh, right. That makes sense. Why do y’all call it Cold Rocks instead of Cold Stone, anyway?”

“We also say Macca’s instead of McDonald’s,” Luke pointed out. “It’s just a jargon thing.”

Taylor cocked her head in wonder. “What does your McDonald’s taste like, I wonder?”

“Honestly, better than yours. I’ll take you to Sydney someday so you can try it.”

“That would be lovely!” Taylor looked at her watch: 9:16 pm. “I guess I’d better head inside. You have my number, right?”

“I do, yeah. Have a good night!”

“You, too.”

“Hey, sweetie,” Martha greeted Taylor as she walked in. “How was your very first date?”

“It went pretty well, actually,” Taylor said. She told Martha about the conversations she’d had with Luke and about the encounter with the fan’s father who happened to be their waiter.

“Wonderful!” Martha gushed, pulling Taylor in for a tight hug. “I’m so happy for you. See, I knew you’d do well on a date!”

“Yeah, on this date. But he invited me on a second date, too. What even happens after the first date?”

“The partners get to know each other better, and then if the second date goes well, he’ll ask you out again and again.” Martha’s expression turned serious. “There is one thing I need to talk to you about – sex. Now, the age of consent here in Minnesota is 16, which you already are, so you should be good.”

“Uh-huh,” Taylor said, sitting next to her on the couch.

“But that doesn’t mean you can just go and have sex with Luke yet.”

“She’s right, honey,” Clint chimed in from his armchair. Taylor hadn’t noticed him before because she was too preoccupied with Martha. “Our rule around here is, no sex until you’re eighteen. We won’t disown you if you do it sooner, of course, but we want to give you the best rest of your adolescence that you could ever ask for.”

Clint and Martha took turns explaining the sex rule, and by the end of it, Taylor’s head was spinning. If the age of consent was 16, why didn’t they want her to have sex until 18?

“I’m just going to go to bed,” Taylor said.

“You’ve had a fun-filled night, I’m sure,” Clint agreed. “You’re probably pretty tuckered out, anyway.”

“I am,” Taylor admitted. “Goodnight.”

“We’ll see you in the morning,” Martha promised.

Before she climbed into bed, Taylor remembered she was supposed to message Ella with an update on her date.

Taylor: Just got home
Ella: OMG how was it?!
Taylor: Awesome! We have lots in common, and he wants a second date!
Ella: That’s amazing! How was Vinny’s?
Taylor: Oh, it was delicious! I’m glad Luke recommended it. How are you and Nolan?
Ella: We’re good. He got jealous of the guys, though, so I don’t think he’ll be coming to any more concerts.
Taylor: Why was he jealous?
Ella: Oh, that’s the thing about relationships. You can only stick to one guy at a time. He got jealous because he was afraid Calum would steal me away.
Taylor: I get you.
Ella: Well, I’m going to go to sleep now. Goodnight!
Taylor: Night.

Chapter 9: I Like You, I Like You Not

Taylor woke up the next morning to her phone ringing. It was 6:08 in the morning, and the caller ID showed Luke’s name.

“Hey, Luke,” she greeted him with a yawn.

“Hello,” Luke greeted her back. “How did you sleep last night after the date?”

“I slept okay. How about you?”

“Same here. So, about our Cold Rocks date, we never picked a night to do it.”

Taylor giggled. “We didn’t, did we? How long are you in town?”

“Until the seventeenth, so about two more weeks. We can do it tonight, if you want. Then, we can chill at my hotel suite.”

“That sounds good. We usually have dinner at around seven, so you can pick me up at eight.”

“Alrighty, then! Tonight, at eight – got it! I really can’t wait to see you again. I just can’t get you off my mind!”

Taylor blushed. When she had started dating Luke, she’d never expected that he’d feel this way about her. In the back of her mind, things would actually go south instead of upwards, simply because of her lack of dating experience. She expressed her thoughts now to Luke.

“Tay, that’s the silliest thing I’ve ever heard. A man doesn’t judge a woman based on her experience! That’s what job interviewers do, and the date was definitely not a job interview. I’ll see you later, okay?”

“Okay.”

By the time they hung up, Madi was sitting up in bed, wondering what her sister was up to this early in the morning.

“Was that Luke?” she asked groggily.

“Yeah,” Taylor confirmed. “He’s picking me up for ice cream tonight at eight.”

“Cool! So, the date went well, I take it?”

“You could say that, yeah. He said twice already that he can’t wait to see me again. Is that normal?”

“Yeah, it’s very normal! It says that the guy really likes you. That’s the next step after a crush, so I’d say you’re doing pretty well for your first time!”

“Well, I’m not sure if I like him or if it’s just my fandom talking. Besides, he’s 20 and I’m 16.”

“So? You can make it work! Just because you’re dating doesn’t mean you have to have sex. You just have to have a goal, like to get married after graduation. That’s what Drew and I are doing.”

This got Taylor curious. Madi had mentioned her boyfriend Drew several times, but she’d never told her much about him.

“Tell me about your boyfriend,” Taylor prompted Madi. “You always mention him, but I don’t know anything about him.”

“Oh, you’d love him,” Madi said. “He’s super-handsome and so sweet and down-to-earth. He invited me to the movies after lunch, so I’ll introduce him to you when we get back.”

“Okay,” Taylor agreed.

After breakfast, Luke stopped by to drop Lucky off. He’d passed his assessment with flying colors, and after he picked him up, he’d taken the liberty of going to the pet store for all of his supplies.

“Lucky, come!” Taylor commanded. Lucky took a few tentative steps inside, but when Taylor slapped her thighs and repeated the command, he finally approached his new master.

“Good boy!” she praised, giving him some pats on his back.

“Oh, is this Lucky?” Martha asked when she came into view in the foyer. “He’s handsome! What breed is he? A mix, I take it?”

“He’s a boxer-Lab cross,” Luke told her. “They did a DNA test this morning.”

“That’s cool! Did he pass his assessment?”

“With flying colors, ma’am. He’s great with other dogs, children, and he’s a little bit reserved towards strangers, but it’s nothing some socialization can’t fix.”

“Wonderful!”

“Taylor, I got all the things he’ll need at the pet store,” Luke said to Taylor. He handed her a PetSmart bag. Among his purchases were Dog Chow, food and water bowls, some tennis balls, chewing toys, and a rawhide rope. “They’re all Lucky-approved.”

“Thanks for doing all of this, Luke,” Taylor said with a hug.

“It was my pleasure. Well, I’ll see you tonight after dinner.”

“Bye.”

After lunch, Taylor was about to leave and take Lucky for a walk when she saw a car pull up in the driveway. It was a stereotypical “mom car”, so she had to assume the driver was an older woman. Drew’s mom, perhaps?

Taylor watched as the front passenger door opened and a teenaged boy got out. If this was Drew, Taylor could immediately see what Madi saw in him. He was tall and muscular with a mop full of reddish-brown curls and a handsome smile when he flashed it at her.

“Oh, hey,” he greeted her. “I’m Drew. And you are?”

“Taylor,” she said. “You’re here for Madi, right?”

“Yep! Hey, aren’t you Madi’s adopted sister?” Taylor nodded. “I’ve heard so much about you already. And my God, you’re even prettier than she described.”

What was this behavior? Taylor thought. Did he have a crush on her? But whatever it was, it was making her extremely uncomfortable, especially since she was already dating Luke.

“Um… thanks, but I’m already dating someone.”

Drew laughed. “You’ve been here for what, a month? And you’re already dating?! Get out of town!”

Taylor lowered her eyebrows as she scowled. “Yes, and his name is Luke Hemmings. Now, leave me alone!”

“The guy from the one band?! Now, I know you’re playing hard-to-get! He’s a loser, anyway.”

“I am NOT playing hard-to-get – I don’t even know what it means! And how dare you call him a loser!” Taylor balled up her fist to punch him, but Madi caught it before she could do any damage.

“I’ll deal with him,” Madi said. “He had no right to call Luke a loser, sure, but that doesn’t mean you can just go and punch him! Just go ahead and take Lucky for his walk.” Taylor was still seething with anger, so Madi put a calming hand on her shoulder and added, “TRake deep breaths. He’s just jealous.” She glared at Drew as she said the word “jealous”.

Taylor took her sister’s advice. “Thanks, Mads. I needed that.”

Taylor spent half the walk correcting Lucky’s many slip-ups (such as wanting to chase a squirrel), but the other half was spent pondering her crush on Luke. Was it more than that, or was it just infatuation because she’s such a big fan? The more she thought about it, the more she leaned towards the former. It was more than a crush, she decided in the end. She was falling head over heels for Luke Hemmings.

Chapter 10: We All Scream for Ice Cream

When she got home from the walk, Taylor found Madi on the couch in Clint’s arms.

“What’s wrong, Madi?” Taylor asked. “Did the date not go well?”

“Her boyfriend admitted to having a crush on you, Tay,” Clint explained.

Taylor’s hand flew to her mouth in her state of shock. “He didn’t say anything inappropriate, did he?”

“No, but he said he wanted to cheat on me so he could date you instead,” Madi said, obviously in a salty mood.

“Cheat?” Taylor repeated.

“Yeah, that’s a big no-no in relationships,” Clint explained. “It’s grounds for being broken up with… and that’s just what Madi did with Drew. Right, hon?”

“Exactly,” Madi confirmed. “I’m so done with guys!”

“But Madison, Drew was your first boyfriend,” Clint reminded her. “You can’t say all guys are scum after only one relationship! Not every boy out there is like Drew.”

“I don’t give a crap!” Madi heaved a big sigh to calm herself. “So, how was your walk with Lucky?” she asked Taylor.

“It was okay,” Taylor said. “He wanted to chase squirrels for half the time, but other than that, he did pretty well.”

Clint laughed. “That’s what Sunny did when she first joined our family,” he said. “I think it’s just a retriever’s nature to want to chase things.”

“Did you give Luke any more thought?” Madi asked.

“I think I do like him,” Taylor said. “More than as a fan, I mean. I can’t stop thinking about him, and I found myself wondering what he was doing.”

“Maybe eating pizza with Michael?” Madi suggested. This got a giggle out of Taylor.

“They do both love pizza.”

Luke came to pick up Taylor at 7:55, arriving early once again. I could get used to this, Taylor thought with a smile as she went to answer the door. This time, she’d come well-prepared, wearing a plain white tee, a three-quarter-length mint cardigan, and denim capris.

After they gave their greetings, Taylor craned her neck to say goodbye to the others. Then, the two of them walked hand-in-hand to Luke’s car.

“What do you like to do for fun?” Luke asked Taylor after they got their orders. They were sitting out on the patio at Cold Stone.

“I like to sing,” Taylor said. “Well, you probably already know how good I am.”

“Oh, yeah – when we were singing ‘She Looks So Perfect’! Is pop punk your favorite genre to sing?”

“More like southern rock. It’s a mix between country and rock.”

“Ah, like Kid Rock?”

“Yeah, exactly!” Taylor went into a rendition of “All Summer Long” that left Luke absolutely speechless.

“Oh, wow!” Luke marveled when she finished. “That was amazing! Have you ever thought about becoming famous?”

“Not really. I just like to sing for fun.”

“I won’t pressure you. Tell me something, Taylor. Let’s say you’ve dated before. What kind of guy would you look for?”

This was an interesting question, one that Taylor hadn’t really given much thought to. “That’s a tough question. I guess the same thing I’d look for in a friend – loyalty, common interests, and that sort of thing.”

“That’s fair enough. I look for a girl who respects me, the band, and my family – all of which Arzaylea does not do.” Taylor frowned at the mention of his ex’s name, remembering her fear of the girl going psycho on her. “What’s wrong?”

“Arzaylea… I feel like puking every time I hear that name. How can you be sure she won’t do anything to me?”

“Taylor, do you not remember our discussion about her? There’s no need to worry, and if worst comes to worst, I’ve got three best mates that won’t hesitate to defend us.”

“I know, I know… I’m such a worrywart. I’ll try not to let her get to me, but I don’t make promises I can’t keep. Hey, keeping promises is one thing I look for!”

“Exactly! If we don’t keep our promises to each other, how is the relationship going to progress?”

Taylor and Luke continued to discuss things they look for in a relationship, and before they knew it, Cold Stone was kicking them out because it was closing time.

Chapter 11: Love, Sex, and the Paparazzi

Their next stop was Luke’s hotel room, and when they got there, they lingered in Luke’s car for a moment while Luke looked into Taylor’s hazel eyes and Taylor into Luke’s baby blues. Taylor wasn’t sure if this was about to be a kissing scene or not, but Luke gradually leaning in with closed eyes gave her a good enough clue. After all, she’d seen Martha kiss Clint, and they both had their eyes closed.

Taylor closed her eyes, too, just as Luke’s lips touched hers. She trembled under the weight of his smackers, but Luke pulled her close to him to settle her nerves.

“How was that for your first kiss?” Luke asked when the pulled away.

“That was…” Taylor trailed off, but her facial expression allowed Luke to finish her sentence.

“Amazing, right?”

“I thought I was eating cotton candy for a second. It’s so sweet!”

“Want to take it to my room before we get arrested?”

“Absolutely!”

Taylor and Luke got out of the car just in time for Taylor to hear a camera click. Next thing, they were both surrounded by people with cameras.

The paparazzi!

“Luke, can you tell us the status of your relationship with Arzaylea Rodriguez?” a reporter asked.

“Arzaylea and I broke up,” Luke said into the mic that was then shoved in his face. Taylor hoped to God that he was telling the truth. She’d already had a rough life; she didn’t need more problems!

“Who’s the mystery redhead?” another paparazzo asked.

“No comment,” Luke said. “Now, leave us alone – we’re on a date!”

“A date?” a third person repeated.

Luke narrowed his eyes and gave him a judgmental look. “Yes… a date. Now, go away! C’mon, Taylor; let’s run!”

“Taylor?!” one of the paparazzi called out after him. But Luke didn’t pay any attention. All he was focused on was getting Taylor safely inside and to the hotel room.

“Maybe you shouldn’t have used my name,” Taylor suggested after they were in the room.

Luke did a face-palm. “I know!” he groaned, sighing with relief that at least the paparazzi didn’t follow him. Then, he took another good look at Taylor’s curvy, voluptuous frame and remembered what they’d been doing before the paparazzi came.

“So, where were we?” Luke asked. As if to answer his own question, he took Taylor’s chin in his hand and laid a sweet kiss on her lips. This time around, Taylor knew exactly what was happening and joined in, even playing some tongue hockey with him. Then, one thing led to another, and they were suddenly tangled up in each other, skin on skin. They were having sex, exactly what Marha and Clint had warned Taylor against. But man, did Taylor love it!

Luke was still inside Taylor when her phone rang. LKuke pulled out before she picked it up.

“Hey, honey,” Clint’s voice came through the other end of the line. “I just wanted to remind you of your midnight curfew. How’s your date with Luke?”

“Oh, it’s amazing! I’m having…” Taylor caught herself before she said the word “sex” and continued. “…a really good time; we’re chilling at his hotel room right now.”

“Oh, good! Well, it’s almost 11:30, so you might want to think about coming home soon.”

“Okay, thanks. I will.”

“Was that Clint?” Luke asked.

“Yeah, he just wanted to remind me of my midnight curfew. Do you think it’s safe for you to bring me outside again?”

“It will be if I cover myself.”

“Cover myself,” Taylor repeated in her head. That was when she realized that she didn’t remember Luke having a condom on.

“Oh, no!” she said out loud. “Luke, please tell me you used a condom.”

“Yeah, I’ve got them right…” Luke looked over at the bedside table and realized that he’d gotten the condoms out of his suitcase – he just hadn’t opened it and pulled one out to use.

“Oh, crap!” Luke moaned with the realization. “I’m so sorry. I got so into it that I forgot to put one on.”

Taylor gasped. “Do you think…?”

“Yeah, there is a good chance of you getting pregnant, since this was your very first time. But I wouldn’t get too stressed about it. I’m not an obstetrician, you know. Let’s just get our clothes on so I can take you home.”

And so, they did. And thankfully, they got out there without a hitch.

Well, almost.

Just as they were exiting the building, Taylor heard another camera click, then another, then a third.

“Aren’t you that redhead who fainted at the concert Sunday night?” a woman asked Taylor. This made her extremely uncomfortable. She knew she had to get used to all the attention one way or another, but this was still very new to her.

Luke sensed her discomfort and intervened with, “So, what if she is? This is my life and my business ONLY!”

“Well, is she?” a man asked. “We won’t stop until we get answers!”

“No comment. You’re holding me up, anyway; I must get her home before curfew!”

“Curfew?!” the woman repeated. “Miss, are you a minor? How old are you?”

Taylor felt a lump in her throat, making her unable to speak, so Luke jumped in again. “What part of ‘no comment’ do you not understand?! Maybe she is a minor, or maybe she isn’t.”

With that, he pushed the two paparazzi out of his way and rushed Taylor to his car. Then, he got in, gunned the engine, and raced like a jet back to Taylor’s house.

Chapter 12: I Will Wait

On the morning of the 17th, Luke woke Taylor up with a phone call.

“Are y’all supposed to be leaving soon?” Taylor asked after the greeting.

“Yes, by noon,” Luke confirmed. “Would you fancy one more date before we go?”

“Oh, sure! When should I be ready?”

“Oh… eight or 8:30. I want to soak up as much time with you as possible, because we still have a month and a half to go for the tour, and I know you’ll have to start school soon.”

“Yeah, we start on the 22nd.”

“And do you mind if I bring Michael with me? He’s dying to see Madi again.”

Soon after Madi broke up with Drew, Michael had asked her out for a movie date. They had hit it off extremely well, and they’d even shared a goodnight kiss after the date.

“Of course! Madi says she can’t wait to see Michael again, either.”

Luke laughed. “Oh, really? Okay, a double date it is, then.”

At 8:15, Luke and Michael arrived to pick up Taylor and Madi. Luke was the one who came to the door, and when Taylor answered it, she told Madi they were there. Madi bound to the door like a dog, ready to have her second date with a rock star.

Luke took Taylor’s hand and led the girls to his car, where Michael was sitting in the back seat.

“After you, milady,” Luke said to Taylor as he held the passenger door open for her.

“Thank you,” Taylor said, flashing an appreciative smile.

Michael’s face lit up when he saw Madi climb into the back to sit with him. As she was buckling her seatbelt, Michael laid an arm across the back of the seat, then wrapped it around Madi’s shoulders.

“Hi, Madi,” he greeted her. “I’m so sorry this is the last time you’ll see us for a while.”

Madi shrugged. “We can always chat online and through calls and texts,” she reasoned. “Right, Taylor?”

“Yeah, but it won’t be the same,” Taylor confessed. “We’ll have schoolwork to do after the 22nd, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to concentrate without thinking of you.”

“Well, we could help you with anything you’re having trouble with,” Luke pointed out.

Luke did have a point there, and this almost made Taylor feel better. Almost. But one part of her was still unsure, the part where she’ll undoubtedly meet another guy and then end up forgetting about Luke.

“But what if I forget you? What if I meet another guy, and what if we end up having sex like we did? Then, if I get pregnant…”

Madi cut her off by clearing her throat. “Tay, you’re borrowing trouble. And the more you talk about what might happen, the more likely it is to actually happen. Take a deep breath and just enjoy what little time we have left with the guys.”

“Besides, I won’t let you forget me. In fact, let me do something really quick.”

Luke pulled over so he could take his jacket off and hand it to Taylor.

“There! Whenever you start to feel lonely, hold this jacket close to you.”

“Oh, Luke!” Taylor gushed. “You shouldn’t have!”

“And as soon as we come back from tour, if you’re still waiting for me, I’ll buy you a ring and ask you to be my girlfriend.”

“Tell me you’ll wait for me, too. No more Arzaylea!”

“I will wait for you, I promise.”

Luke ended up driving them to a bowling alley, much to Taylor’s delight.

“How did you know I love to bowl?” Taylor asked.

“I don’t know, just a hunch,” Luke answered with a shrug. “Let’s go!”

The four of them played three games, and Taylor won two of them. The third game went to Luke.

They got home just in time for lunch. Taylor hadn’t been the only one who got a parting gift from her date: Madi received a necklace with one of Michael’s guitar picks as a pendant.

“How was the date, girls?” Martha asked over egg salad sandwiches. “And where did you get the necklace, Madi? It looks expensive.”

Madi carried on about her necklace and how Michael had given it to her, but Taylor stayed silent. She just kept eating her sandwich because she was still thinking about Luke’s promise. Would he really wait? Probably not, considering he hadn’t officially broken up with Arzaylea. Or so she was afraid of.

“Tay?” Clint asked, bringing Taylor out of her thoughts. “Adrian asked you a question. Go ahead, son.”

“Where did you get the cool jacket?” Adrian asked.

“Luke gave it to me,” Taylor said softly, without much enthusiasm.

“Honey, what’s wrong?” Martha asked. “I thought you were coming out of your shell?”

Over the past month, Taylor had become accustomed to midwestern living and being with the Richards family, so much so that she’s gradually become a social butterfly. This new behavior was thus very concerning for Martha.

“She misses Luke very sorely,” Madi interjected.

Martha frowned. “Oh, because they’re off to their next city?”

“Yeah.”

Martha dove into a story about Clint being in the military a few years back. He would be gone for months at a time, and Martha would miss him just as much as Taylor missed Luke.

“And just think… you’ll be so busy with school that the next month and a half will whiz by!” Madi pointed out.

Taylor sighed and pushed away from the table. “Can I be excused?” She asked. She was almost done with her sandwich anyway.

“Of course, sweetheart,” Clint permitted.

Taylor put her dishes in the sink and called out to Lucky for his afternoon walk. The dog came bounding down the stairs with Sunny on his heels. Madi saw this happen and offered to take Sunny. Taylor accepted the offer, and the two girls left on their walk. Madi suggested a nearby dog park that was within walking distance, so that’s where they went.

Taylor had to admit that the time outside with Madi and the dogs really helped lift her spirits. By the time they went home, she was in a much better mood.

Chapter 13: The Other Guy

Monday was the kids’ first day of school. This meant that the girls would have to get up at five on the dot to make their 7 am school day. Taylor usually was an early riser, but she’d been homeschooled most of her life, so this would take some getting used to.

“Are you ready for school?” Martha asked as she saw Taylor shuffle into the kitchen. She had settled on a blue dress, a denim jacket, and her brown sandals.

Reaching for her already-made cup of coffee, Taylor responded with a nod. “How am I getting there?”

“The bus will pick you up at six fifteen right in front of the house. I’ll ask Madi to show you around.”

“You’ll love it at Hastings High,” Clint added. “The teachers and students are both very nice. My cousin is actually your algebra teacher, Mrs. Dunlap.”

“Thanks,” Taylor said. “I’ll look out for her.”

“And try to keep Luke at the back of your mind,” Madi advised. “I don’t want you to get in trouble on your first day.

Taylor ate her breakfast at the counter, and when she was done, she went outside with Madi to wait for the bus.

As the bus arrived at the school, Taylor was in shock at how big it was. It was a large red brick building that had to be at least three stories tall.

“It’s so big!” She commented. “Looks like you could get lost in there.”

“That’s what you have me for, silly!” Madi reminded her.

The bus parked in the lot, and the driver, a chatty old man named Charlie who spent most of the ride chatting with Taylor, opened the door to let the students out.

“Have a great first day, Taylor!” Charlie called after her as she got off.

Madi was walking across the yard with Taylor close behind when somebody called her name. Taylor turned and saw immediately who it was: a tall blonde girl with glasses and braces.

“Hey, Bailey!” Madi greeted her, waving her over. When the girl was within earshot, Madi nudged Taylor forward. “Bailey, this is my adopted sister, Taylor Conway; she joined my family back in July. Taylor, this is my bestie, Bailey Emerson.”

“Nice to meet you!” Bailey greeted Taylor, shaking her hand. “Where were you adopted from?”

“Dawson, Georgia,” Taylor said, deciding not to tell her about her foster care stint. That was a conversation for another time. “It’s down near Albany.”

Madi looked at her watch. “We should probably head inside,” she suggested. “It’s 6:45.”

The girls did just that, and after a trip to the principal's office, Madi took Taylor to her first class. The classroom was abuzz with kids talking to one another, and the teacher was typing on his computer. On the board was the name Mr. Abernathy, written in cursive.

Taylor slid down into a seat in the front, and Madi sat next to her. A few minutes later, Mr. Abernathy started his introductory spiel. On and on he went, explaining what they would be covering, his class rules, and what his tests were like.

Not that Taylor was paying attention. She spent this time writing things like “TC + LH 4ever” and “Mrs. Taylor Hemmings” on her notebook paper. She was in the middle of another doodle when Madi slapped her hand.

“The teacher is talking!” She whispered.

Taylor sighed and finally tuned in. He was droning on about the Civil War, a topic Taylor really couldn’t care less about. Who even uses war history in real life, anyway? Her attitude was that history should stay just that… history.

After class, Taylor was at her locker when she was joined by a guy who looked to be in her same grade. He had a bowl cut with blond highlights, brown eyes, and a tall, muscular frame. He was fairly cute, but nothing like Luke.

“Hey, you’re the new girl, right?” He asked. When she nodded, he added, “I’m Drake Potts. I was sitting behind you in history. You have pretty hair and a nice accent.”

Taylor wasn’t interested, as she immediately told him. Luke had made a promise to her and she had made a promise to Luke. No way in hell was she about to break that promise.

Taylor continued what she was doing and walked away, but Drake quickly caught up with her. “If you have a boyfriend, why don’t I see you with him?”

“Because he’s not here,” Taylor said plainly. “He’s on tour with his band.”

“Well, guys in bands are losers, anyway. They never have time for girls because they’re always busy with their music career. I can treat you way better.”

Taylor was fuming now. “You did not just say that! Luke Hemmings makes time for me, and nobody could possibly hold a candle to him!”

“Well, at least be friends with me. Can you do that? We could study together after school.”

Taylor sighed. “Okay, but we’re just friends. I don’t want Luke to get the wrong idea. Where do you live?”

After school, Taylor rode with Drake on his bus so she could study at his place, as he lived in a different neighborhood to hers. When they got to his house, a smaller home with sky blue siding and white trim, Drake led her inside and straight to his room. It was furnished with a full-sized bed, a bedside table, a dresser, and a desk with a computer. On the walls were several posters of bands she’d never heard of.

“Who are those bands?” Taylor asked.

“Only the best in the industry,” Drake answered. “I’m afraid your boyfriend and his band don’t compare. Arctic Monkeys is one of my favorites; you should give them a listen.”

Taylor rolled her eyes. She would never be converted into a metal head. Not on her watch. “Let’s just get started.”

The study session actually went quite well, despite the differences between Taylor and Drake. That is, until they reached the last bit of homework. That was when Taylor realized Drake was looking at her boobs.

“How long have you been looking at these?” Taylor asked suspiciously.

“Long enough to want to have sex,” Drake replied. “Even though I don’t like your boyfriend, I can definitely see what he sees in you.”

Taylor blushed. “Well, I’m not a virgin.”

She had hoped this would put him off, but no such luck. “Excellent! So, if you get pregnant, he’ll never know!”

“Yeah, he will! I’ll need to do a DNA test to figure out whose baby it is. If it turns out to be yours, my relationship with Luke…”

Taylor was cut off with a kiss on her lips. She reflexively joined in, and then they started to have sex.

With every move that Drake made, Taylor grew more and more regretful about doing this. She couldn’t stand the fact that he was inside her when it should’ve been Luke.

Chapter 14: 16 and Pregnant

The next month and a half flew by, just as Madi predicted. Taylor and Luke continued to keep in touch, and by the time the tour was over in early October, they were both ready to take the relationship further.

On the morning of October 10th, Taylor woke up feeling sick and tired. Her head was throbbing, and she could swear her heart was in her ear; it was pounding very loudly.

She closed her eyes again and tried to fall back asleep, but then she started feeling nauseous. Her dinner from last night, a heaping helping of orange chicken, was slowly making its way up her esophagus. Maybe she’d had too much food? Yeah, that had to be it. It was either that or pregnancy… but no way in hell could she be pregnant at 16… could she?

“Tay, you look pale,” Madi said. “You alright?”

The spicy chicken dish made its way to the top of her throat, and she started retching really hard. Finally, after about the third retch, it came spewing out in all its brown-and-orange glory.

“Ugh, my hair!” Madi protested. “Okay, I’m getting Mom.”

Taylor laid her aching head back against the pillow as she heard Madi shouting for Martha to come to her aid. Martha was there in a few moments with some towels, a Dramamine pill, and a glass of water.

“Oh, my… it’s everywhere!” She commented. “I guess my orange chicken was a little too spicy for you. Here, take this for your nausea.”

She dropped the tablet into Taylor’s hand, and Taylor drank it down with water.

“Are you getting sick? Do you want to stay home from school?”

Kyle, as curious as ever, joined his mother just as Taylor was describing her symptoms. He couldn’t help but laugh; Martha had exhibited the very same symptoms when she was pregnant with Madi, and then again with Adrian.

“Sounds like Mom when she was pregnant with Madi and Adrian,” he said after he laughed.

This made Taylor extremely irritated. “Y’all, I’m not pregnant!” She shouted. “Does it even look like it?”

Martha looked down at Taylor’s belly. “Well, you are kind of showing a little,” she pointed out.

“So, what if I am?!”

Martha put her hands on her hips. “Don’t sass me, young lady! I’m going to get you some pregnancy tests, okay? In the meantime, try and get some rest.”

Taylor rolled her eyes but decided to go with it. “Fine, but I’m telling you I’m not pregnant!”

Taylor only got another hour of sleep before Clint knocked at the door. He walked in and sat on the edge of her bed.

“Taylor, your mother just came home with pregnancy tests,” he said solemnly, handing her the tests. “Do you want to explain?”

Taylor scowled. “No, I don’t want to explain!” She snapped. “There’s nothing to explain, anyway.”

“Honey, where’s the sweet girl we brought home last summer? This isn’t like you.”

“I don’t know! Go away!”

Clint got up and towered over his daughter. “Taylor Renee, you’re going to tell me right now what made you get pregnant!”

“Well, I was kissing Luke after our second date…”

Clint sighed, cutting Taylor off. “Hold your breath; I know the rest. I guess you’ll have to get yourself a whole lot of money if you want to keep this baby.”

“But he didn’t realize he hadn’t used a condom until after the fact! That hardly counts as having sex on purpose.”

Clint sat back down. “It’s not about whether or not it was intentional. You still had sex, and now you’re going to have to suffer the consequences.”

“What about Luke? Can I still see him?”

Clint rubbed his chin in thought. “Maybe. I’ll discuss it with Martha first.”

Five minutes later in the bathroom, after she used all the sticks, Taylor sat on the toilet, dumbfounded. Each and every one of them gave two pink lines.

She was pregnant. Or was she? This had to be a false positive, because as far as she knew, teens couldn’t get pregnant. Or can they?

Taylor meandered towards her room to call Luke and let him know. He answered on the fourth ring.

“Luke, I need to tell you something,” Taylor stated. “Are you sitting down?”

Luke chuckled. I’m lying down; does that count? It’s four in the morning here in LA, you know.”

That was when Taylor remembered the time difference. “Oh, I’m sorry… should I call you back?”

“No, no… you’ve got me up now, so I may as well hear you out. What news do you have for me?”

Taylor felt a lump in her throat as she opened her mouth to speak, so she gulped it down. “I’m pregnant.”

There was a long pause before Luke spoke again. “Tay… is this true? Are you really having a baby?” His voice was somewhere between a whisper and normal tone.

“Yeah,” Taylor said. “I’m sorry!”

“Don’t be! I’m so happy for you… for us. I’m just shocked, that's all.”

Then, Taylor thought about her recent discussion with Clint about suffering the consequences of having sex. “What should I do? I’m against abortion, and I really don’t want to put the baby through the same crap I did.”

“Then, I guess you’d better keep it. I don’t see why you wouldn’t, though. You’re a smart girl, and I would personally love to see a little Luke or Taylor running around.”

“I’ll sleep on it. But how was the tour? You didn’t meet any other girls, did you?”

“Nope! The tour was fun, and I’m still waiting for you. What about you?”

Just then, Taylor felt another retch coming, followed immediately by vomiting. It was a very unpleasant sound for Luke to hear. To him, it sounded like a dying cat.

“Taylor, you good?” He asked. “You sound unwell.”

“I’m alright,” Taylor lied. “It was just a cough.”

“No, you’re quite ill. I’m coming over.”

“But you’re so far away!” Taylor whined.

“I’m willing to go any distance just to see you again. I’ll let you know when I get in.”

Chapter 15: Please Don’t Leave Me

Luke got into town at lunchtime, and Martha picked him up from the airport. When she saw him approaching, Martha waved him over.

“Hey, Mrs. Richards,” Luke greeted her with a hug. The way he addressed her made her laugh.

“What’s with the formality? Call me Martha! How are you? How was the rest of your tour?”

“It was great; we had a good time,” Luke said as he followed Martha to her car. He dragged his suitcase behind him. “I hope you don’t mind, I got a little surprise for Taylor. I can still see her, right?”

“Yes, of course! As long as you’ll be there for her and the baby.”

“Challenge accepted.”

Taylor was out of bed, watching CMT on the living room TV and eating applesauce, when Martha came in.

“Somebody’s finally up,” she remarked. “Enjoying your show?”

“Yeah,” Taylor said. “I got tired of being cooped up, so I came down here.” She gazed beyond Martha and, to her delight, saw Luke coming into view. “Luke!”

“Taylor, you’ve no idea how much I’ve missed you!” Luke gushed, giving Taylor a hug.

“Probably not half as much as I missed you,” she said. “I can’t concentrate in school because of you.”

“It’s true,” Martha said. “She even served her very first detention last Friday for doodling your name in class… didn’t you, Taylor?” She shot Taylor a disapproving glare as she said this.

Taylor gave a sheepish nod. “My history teacher was the one who gave it to me. But I hate history class!” This sparked a memory of the day she had sex with Drake. “Oh, speaking of school… there’s this guy in my history class.”

Luke dropped his jaw. Had Taylor broken the promise she’d made before he left with the band? “Oh, hell no! He didn’t have his way with you, did he?”

Taylor bit her lip and nodded.

“Then, you broke your promise. Do you not remember our discussion on keeping promises?” Luke sighed and stood up.

“Luke, please don’t leave me! I didn’t mean it, I swear!”

“Uh-huh… of course, you didn’t. You just broke any trust I had in you, Taylor Renee Conway. Goodbye and good riddance!”

“Luke!” Taylor yelled after him as he left. “Luke, wait!”

But Luke didn’t listen. He went out to the doorstep to look for the next flight home. He had just about booked a flight that would leave in three hours when he was joined by Martha.

“Luke, honey?” she addressed him. “Taylor really didn’t mean to have sex with the other boy.”

Luke scoffed. “Yeah, right!”

“Lucas, listen to me.” Martha sat next to Luke and looked him straight in the eyes. “My daughter’s heart is broken. She’s crying on the couch because you broke up with her.”

“Well, she can go see that other guy and forget about becoming my girlfriend!” He pulled out a ring box from Tiffany’s. “See this? This is what I would’ve given her. Now I’m going to have to return it because she broke my trust!”

“Please go and talk to her.”

“No! She can cry me a bloody river for all I care!”

In the Uber on the way to the airport, the driver asked Luke why he was in such a snit.

“The girl who was supposed to be my girlfriend bloody broke my trust,” Luke complained.

“Oh…” the man said, his voice sympathetic. “That had to hurt. How did she break your trust?”

“You’ve got no idea. She had sex with another bloke behind my back. She tried to tell me she didn’t mean it, but honestly, if that was the case, she wouldn’t have let him have his way with her!”

The driver turned left to merge onto the highway, towards the airport. “Well, I don’t know about that. If I were in your shoes, I’d accept that explanation and move forward with asking her to be your girlfriend.”

Luke gave him a scowl. “You don’t know what you’re talking about. I suggest you just shut up and drive!”

Chapter 16: Dead Man Crawling

Luke managed to make it through security without any fans noticing him, thanks to his face mask, sunglasses, and ballcap, and he grabbed some lunch before he headed for the gate for Los Angeles.

While he waited for his flight to board, Luke thought about his words to Taylor, and then what the Uber driver had said about accepting her explanation and moving on. Maybe he was in the wrong for doubting her. Maybe he was a fool for letting her go, for making her cry. But still, a big part of him said that he should move on without Taylor.

Luke’s thoughts were only broken when an airport employee said, “Sir, they just started the boarding process. You might want to get on the plane before you miss it.”

Meanwhile, at the airport entrance, Kyle and Taylor waited in line for the baggage checking counter. They would surely know where Luke’s gate was… right? There were several people of all ages and ethnicities with bags of various sizes, and everybody was engaged in their own conversations. Taylor started to feel more alone as the line progressed and more people were added to the back, since she didn’t have any luggage to check, but Kyle gave her a comforting hand squeeze.

“We’re doing this in the name of love, remember?” he whispered to his sister.

“Yeah, I know,” Taylor said. “But how much longer? I need to pee!”

“We’re almost there, sis. We’re next in line, actually.”

“Next!” an employee bellowed from behind the counter. Kyle and Taylor made their way to where the employee was standing, and Kyle asked about the gate for Los Angeles.

“Gate B7,” she said.

“Great!” Kyle said with a smile. “We won’t have too far to run, then.”

“Run?” the black woman asked. “Are you two eloping or something?”

“We’re trying to track down my sister’s love interest.”

She smirked. “Well, good luck with that. That flight’s boarding as we speak.”

“Oh, no!” Taylor panicked.

“Tay, I ran track and field in high school,” Kyle said. “We’re going to make it!”

Taylor sighed. “If you say so…”

Kyle ended up knocking down more than a few travelers as he ran for Gate B7, dragging Taylor along with him. She found it quite hard to keep up with her brother. He sure wasn’t lying about his stint in high school track and field!

When they finally reached the gate, Taylor scanned the area with her eyes, hoping to God she’d see Luke’s face… but to no avail. She then burst into tears, and Kyle wrapped her in his arms.

“Tay, don’t cry,” he consoled. “You can always call him to get him back. Let’s just go home and take a nap; I think you really need one.”

Taylor took Kyle’s hand as he led her back the way they came. Along the way, Taylor thought she heard Luke calling her name… or maybe she was just hearing things. Funny what pregnancy does to your brain.

As they walked farther, she heard that same voice again. This prompted Kyle to stop and turn around to look. Probably because he just saw a cute girl or something. Luke couldn’t possibly want her back now, could he? Not after what he said to her.

While Kyle was distracted by whomever it was, Taylor shuffled along in the same direction she’d been heading. She only stopped when she felt two big hands covering her eyes.

“Guess who?” the male voice teased before he spun her around.

Luke!

“Oh, my God, I thought you were a goner?!” Taylor squealed, throwing her arms around him.

“Almost,” Luke said. “But listen, I thought about what I said to you this afternoon. I was a fool for jumping to conclusions. I should’ve just believed you and moved on.”

“You were probably just in your head about the whole pregnancy thing. If I were a guy, I’d have done the same thing.”

“Exactly, yeah. With that being said…” Luke pulled the ring box out again and presented it to Taylor. “I love you to bits and pieces, and I really hope you feel the same.”

“I do feel the same,” Taylor agreed. She held her breath in anticipation of what was in the box. Then, Luke opened it to reveal a beautiful ruby ring. The shiny ruby glistened every time Taylor moved it. Surrounding the large gemstone was a floral design, which matched the silver band.

“Luke, this is beautiful!” Taylor cried. “How did you know ruby was my birthstone?”

Luke shrugged. “Just a guess. And the ruby is for the month we met. So, will you be my girlfriend?”

“I’d be honored to be your girlfriend.”

After she slipped the ring on, Taylor and Luke shared a celebratory kiss before the three of them headed home.

By the time Taylor, Luke, and Kyle returned home, Madi and Adrian had gotten home from school.

“Ooh, nice ring!” Martha commented when she saw the shiny thing on Taylor’s left ring finger. Then, she smiled so wide that even her eyes were smiling. “Did he ask you to be his girlfriend?”

“He did, and I said yes!” Taylor announced proudly.

“Well, congratulations! I’m fixing dinner right now, and I’ll call you whenever it’s ready.”

At the dinner table that night, Taylor waited for a lull in the conversation to make her announcement. When it came, she tapped her glass with her fork to get everyone’s attention.

“Y’all, I have a huge announcement to make,” she said.

“Okay, go for it!” Clint urged.

“Luke and I…” Taylor gestured towards Luke.

“We’re boyfriend/girlfriend!” Luke finished.

Claps and cheers from all family members.

“And… I’ve decided to drop out of school to focus on motherhood.”

This announcement was apparently harder to swallow. The whole room went silent as they stared at Taylor with wide eyes.

“You’re kidding me!” Clint shouted. “Taylor, you know education comes first! At least tell us you’ll get your GED when you’re ready.”

“That’s the plan, sir,” Luke said. “And my mum is a teacher herself, so I’ll hold Taylor accountable, too.”

“When are you moving in with Luke?” Madi asked sadly. “I’m going to miss you – we all are!”

“Aw…” Taylor said, blushing. “Probably within the next couple of months. You’ll have plenty of time to spend with me, and I’ll still be here for Christmas.”

“That makes sense,” Martha said. “Well, when you go, I hope you have a good time in LA.”

“I sure will, and I’ll be sure and send baby updates, too.”

And that's a wrap on this first installment! I'll post chapter 1 of the sequel probably when I get home from church tonight... or sooner, if I have time between that and bowling
