Did you know that humans can’t feel wetness? We interpret things as wet based on other sensations, like temperature.

Why is this not fun? Because I was reminded of it today. And not in a fun “hey here I can see this fact in usage” but rather in a “are my hands just cold does this produce have methanol on it”? Which is a bit helpful to know

They would have a harder time interpreting wetness, especially if it’s near room temperature theres still other cues the brain uses, like friction, but it would be harder to tell wetness at first.

this reminds me of something interesting. a good while ago one of my swim coaches asked me in hindi a question that would literally translate to "is the water wetter than usual?" i was confused cause how is water more wet or less wet? turns out that it's apparently an expression which would mean "is the water colder than usual?" that said i've never heard anyone else use this expression so idk really, but it's fun to think about how language is impacted by this

You don’t feel the wetness itself but you perceive it as being wet because you’ve learned that wetness feels like that combination of cold and other sensations
