It is characterized by usage of non-standard time signatures, which is seen as *mathematical* in character to listeners & critics alike, giving the genre its peculiar name.
Other characteristics include dissonant chords & complex rhythmic structures.
It showcases common rock instruments like guitars & drums, with certain techniques unique to the genre being employed.
The voice is not in the forefront & is generally hidden by the overarching instrumentation.

Notable subgenres & derivatives : Post-rock, Mathcore.
