Given the buzz about Rhapsody In Blue, I'd like to share a tidbit regarding its composer. George Gershwin wrote the musical Porgy and Bess in 1935, and here are some interesting facts about it:

In three acts, Porgy and Bess tells the doomed love story of beggar who is disabled and an unmarried mother who are plagued by Bess’ violent former boyfriend, Crown, and a cynical drug dealer named Sportin’ Life. Gershwin insisted that the opera be performed only by a black cast—rather than white actors in blackface—which initially made it difficult to find a home for Porgy and Bess on Broadway, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. Gershwin lost money on the production.

Blackface was commonly used in American theater starting in the mid-1800s.

On A Ride is a great demonstration of counterpoint.

The opening "Da da la da da ..." is the prechorus, sung by the members. When verse 1 starts, the synth plays the prechorus notes while the girls sing the melody/topline. Notice how the synth and the voices go their separate ways yet they sound good together.

In chorus 1, verse 2 and chorus 2 we hear more chopped up versions of the prechorus as the accompaniment, and the prechorus melody returns in the outro as "Da da la da da ...".

This is wonderful. This is Red Velvet.
