On a scale of 1-10 how interesting is global history for you? (1 Viewer)

Yeah I get having a preference. But some preferences imo make more sense. If someone liked the history of Spain, China, Zimbabwe, and Venezuela let’s say but found Ecuador, France, Nepal, and South Africa boring it would seem like an odd assortment of countries unless there was a deeper tie between the countries in the like group. And using you as an example, you like Chinese history because of your connections. Which makes sense, a lot of people like the countries they/their ancestors are from. But even people with families from various parts of the world don’t typically have this connection with a bunch of countries just because there’s so many and it’s hard to get your ancestors so spread out so it becomes some kind of majority. So like I said, a preference to some small number if countries due to connection isn’t likely to yield all that many countries realistically, and that’s typically the reason for most preferences I feel. Past that it gets more odd if you like the history of seemingly random countries but dislike the history of the rest seemingly random countries. Does that make sense?

maybe it's financial - they are getting paid to do research or teach in that area
maybe it's a personal connection - family/friends/ or they've travelled to that area and now more interested...
maybe it's a general and otherwise random interest...

I've never met someone who has an interest in all aspects of history - you might be the first my friend lol

normally the people I've know like some or one aspect of one region/country/area to the exclusion of others...and it's not like a random selection of countries they normally have a connection like I mentioned above but I would think even if they didn't sure I would query why one would be interested in one random country and not another...but again I equate that to kpop groups and other interests not just history - a person can be interested any anything to the exclusion of anything else - I mean there are akgaes who only like one member to the exclusion sometimes of the rest of the group - to me that's crazy but they exist and whatever crazy reason they have they have them...

I wouldn’t say I’m deeply interested in all aspects of the history of every country in earth. But for most I have some interest in. Like I don’t necessarily spend my free time researching every country in depth in order until I’ve learned it all. But if someone teleported me to Australia (for example) and asked if I’d like to visit notable places in Australian history and learn more about the history of them I’d be eager to go. Teleport me to most countries and the story would be the same. And ofc not just tours, many ways of learning their history would interest me. There will ofc be some parts of the history I’m less interested in, but I did say 8 and not 10 so I have a bit of leeway
And I get the preference thing is not a random selection of countries. But if you want to say you’re 50% interested in the countries of the world (to rank of a 5 in that scale) preferences wont cut it. Unless to somehow have preferences for half the world, which is rather hard to do. Therefore if you want to reach a 5 in that aspect you’re not likely going to pick and choose because at that point they become very similar. It can be done I’m sure, but not by many. That being said maybe if you’re interested in fewer countries but more aspects someone can say their interest is 5 on average. It’s just not extremely likely I’d say

I guess there's two approaches to this question:

1. your 8 approach seems to be you have a high interesting in history globally but obviously where the actual research or investigation of the history lies isn't necessary global per se but rather wherever your heart fancies but it does encompass the entire globe

2. probably more my interpretation - no one give oneself a 10 or any high score since by it's very nature global history encompasses too much/many things for one person to know and thus unless that person is actively researching and taking up all of the world's history all (most?) of the time they can't be seen to be "taking an interesting in global history"

It's not that I'm not interested. It's that my interest for most areas isn't high enough to very actively seek out that history without some kind of prompting (being there, seeing a fact about that place, someone discussing it and me realizing I know little and want to know more, ect). I consider that interest still because if I didn't have interest then being there wouldn't make me want to look into it more, seeing a fact would mean I'd be like "that's nice" and move on with my life, and the discussion wouldn't impact me because who cares about that anyways. If a discussion about how many brushstrokes were used in the Mona Lisa for perfect reflection or whatever came up for example I wouldn't look into it because art doesn't usually interest me. To me those are still interest, not as high of a level as some other things (for example, the space race, though my recent research was triggered by reading about a statue also). I do think we just have a different view of what interest means, with your view I wouldn't be an 8 for sure. It would be really hard to be because there's too much history globally to ever learn it all in detail. But under my idea of interest I do think I'd be an 8 or so, and I'm guessing most people would probably use a looser definition of interest like me, based on the numbers here

Pretty much only ever learned abt Europe for 2 reasons
I find the rest of the world history fairly boring despite not being European
I took Italy's med school entrance exam where there were around 10 questions dedicated to general knowledge part of which was history of mostly Europe, afterall that's where italy is.

hmm...I guess we just have a different ranking/numbering system plus different interpretations of what is "interesting"

most likely but I would also argue that most people tend to be very generous with their ratings/number systems overall whereas I'm more of a bell curve kinda guy lol
