This is our first time dealing with a broody hen and I am finding it very interesting ngl. Our hen Maple is the one that showed signs of going broody (she stopped recently I’m assuming because it’s gotten so cold). Tbh I don’t think it was her being fully broody because she didn’t seem 100% devoted to it, but she’s still young so I’m assuming it was her testing out the waters :oliviakek:But I first noticed that she was insisting on sleeping in their nesting corner in the coop rather than her preferred sleeping perch. The next day she quickly came out to eat and very aggressively went after two of our other hens, she is more at the top of their hierarchy but it was more than her usual warning peck. (All of them are fine, no blood or anything). I then noticed I hadn’t seen her for about four hours (we can see the majority of their run from our living room/kitchen and I always look out at them throughout the day.) I went to see where she was and she was where I expected her to be: In the coop on some eggs:sakUwu:
Now unfortunately we don’t have a safe enough way for our hens to hatch a clutch in the winter, she would need her own area for herself and her chicks and currently we only have one heated coop so we would have to take her and the eggs in the house which wouldn’t be very fair to her. So I needed to take the egg from her and thankfully she didn’t put up a fight like most mama’s do (which is why I think she wasn’t totally broody). She sort of fluffed up at me but thankfully no pecking and I was able to get the egg. Ngl though I felt bad afterwards because I could tell she obviously was wondering where her egg had gone.
:umjicry:
But it’s exciting to know that at least one of our girls is showing signs of wanting to hatch some eggs, if she or any of our other girls become broody in warmer months we’ve decided to let them hatch a few (definitely can’t keep them all but it will be a fun experience).
:pikahappy:
Peace out from the chicken lady :rjbow:
