While winning their presidential election. James Polk won the election of 1844, while losing both North Carolina (his birth state) and Tennessee (his state of residence). The only other president to do this was Trump in 2016, but unlike Polk, Trump’s home state and residence state were the same (New York), so it’s a little different.
