Tonight I went out to lock the flock up and check in on them (they need to be counted to make sure everyone is safely out of the weather and away from potential predators). A few months ago I accidentally didn’t count and left Penny and Cayenne out in freezing weather which was also during a time where there was a large coyote family in the neighborhood (They’re both alright) but I felt so bad.

Anyways, I was counting all of them and realized that they were all out in the rain before they came into the coop and were soaking wet. I turned on the heat lamp so they can get dry, but the roosters were dry…. How you may wonder? They both burrowed themselves under the hens for warmth.

Excuse you sirs but you two are supposed to be the ones providing them warmth not the other way around.

It just reminded me of our last rooster Chica (we thought he was a hen lol). We forgot to open up the coop door for them during a rainstorm and he kept the hens dry by doing what a mother chicken would do, situating them under him and spreading his wings out over them. He was a very good boy.
Anyways Hey Hey and Stitch will hopefully learn how to be gentleman soon. They do pretty well with other things (feeding the hens treats which is real cute and alerting when there’s a hawk or falcon) but there’s a few things we really wish they wouldn’t do(like chasing the girls when they want to mate in the morning)
