In 1964, US president Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He chose to follow a traditional practice, in which he used multiple pens to sign the document. Around 75, to be exact. This may sound odd and wasteful, but it’s was purposely done so he could give each pen as a ceremonial gift to supporters, advocates, those who were important in the passing of the bill, ect. One person who received one of these pens was Martin Luther King Junior. This tradition isn’t followed with every bill a US president signs, but US presidents will do this for bills they consider very important (though some presidents don’t partake in this).
