If you don’t know, a postpositive adjective is when an adjective is put after the noun/pronoun, while for a prepositive adjective it goes in front. As an example, a prepositive example is “the red dog”, while the postpositive version is “the dog red”. In English, prepositive is predominant. However, there are cases in the language where that’s actually not the case.
A very easy set of examples falls under the tried and true method called blame the French. The French language has given many examples like this, where the phrase was adopted as a whole and never altered to fit English. It’s especially common in law. Some examples are attorney general, court martial, and femme fatal. There are also examples from languages like Italian languages (spaghetti bolognese), Abrahamic languages in religious contexts (devil incarnate), set phrases (treasure trove, times past), and more.
I’m going to make a second thread for the rest of this because i can blab
There I’ll talk about other cases in English where you can find this, and even some where it’s required or can change the meaning. I just find it interesting because growing up the default was always taught as adjective before noun, but like most cases, there are exceptions. So it’s kind of cool to see the exceptions.
