I got an article about a tourist who went to Death Valley in July. The picked flip flops to wear because smart. Then they lost their flip flops in a dune. It was really hot out (123F/51C air temp, sand temp would be quite a bit higher). It was so hot that the skin on their feet melted off. Their groupmates carried him to the parking lot. The park rangers knew they needed medical help obviously, by it it was too hot for a helicopter to land. So they had to put the person in an ambulance and take them to a place that was higher elevation, and therefore cooler, before being able to have a helicopter land and take the person to a hospital.

So in summary, dress right. So that you don’t get feet melted off or anything. In case you didn’t know, it’s not fun for that to happen. Generally.

it's crazy to go there in 120 degree weather.

good news is that the person survived....i wonder who is footing the bill for that amount of manpower plus the helicopter

I know that sometimes, this would lead to them paying the bill, due to their negligence. For example, I’ve heard that the mountains in the Northeast follow the idea where if their rescue was due to negligence, they pay, if it’s a freak accident that wouldn’t reasonably be predicted, the taxpayers help fund it. But for Death Valley specifically I don’t know who gets charged.

in this case it looks like negligence.

some foreign tourists underestimate how extreme the weather in the U.S can get. also they traveled from far away so they want to see as much as they can. not good to do that in extreme weather tho

It does, but for Death Valley I don’t know their policy on such a matter. I would guess that they may pay at least part of the price no matter if negligence is a factor, given that it’s one of the biggest national parks in the US and world and therefore attracts a lot of crowds from all over, so they may feel the need to be more lenient. But that’s just my guess, I haven’t looked into it.
