Pupdate: I'm going on a treat purge (2 Viewers)

So I have some good news.
I can potentially bring him home today. Initially we wanted to bring him home two nights ago but it got pushed to yesterday and then pushed to today morning and then pushed to today evening. Reason being because he threw up and that put a wrench in shifting him to long acting insulin.

I've spent my morning trying to catch up on work XD but my boss has been very lenient and understanding thank god. He has 2 pups himself and once had a Shi Zhu who was diabetic in her elder years. He's been giving me a lot of advice. I gotta control his diet very strictly now so I've also been reading through every ingredient on his treat bags.

Just to give an idea, out of a variety of 9 unopened bags, I can only keep 1 XD Don't worry. His treats will be restocked but diabetic friendly treats.
This child will never say no to treats unless he's back to feeling like how he was late March early April but I think we are past that.

Have any of you guys taken care of a diabetic pet? Any and all advice can help. Obviously I'm also making sure with his doctor what is safe but other stories can be good to hear.
What were their favorite treats? What kind of diet were they on?
I know to avoid sugars and carbs. Purged everything with potatoes and syrups listed in the ingredient.

My mom and I used to dog-sit an elderly chihuahua who ended up diabetic later on (he passed away a few years ago at the age of 13). The dog owner’s would provide us specialized dog food for diabetic dogs (along with his insulin) and we would add pieces of chicken for additional protein.

I'm assuming for his meal it will be like this. He's probably gonna go on a prescription kibble. Plus we've always added wet food (usually those farmers dog/just food for dog frozen brands). Might have to just keep it at lean meats we cook at home for toppers.

Poor puppy. I've never taken care of diabetic pets, but i bet it's hard. But you are doing so well

I know boiled chicken and chicken in general is really good for them. My mom feeds our dogs this canned chicken that stinks so bad, but they love it. They are at normal weights for their age and breed and other than their specific illnesses (epilepsy and some type of skin condition) they seem to be doing alright. My Chi used to be a bit thicc but she lost weight idk how though. We also feed them Kibbles & Bits Steak & Bacon and we keep that down there for them to munch whenever needed. I really hope his diet and health can get under control and he can live happy and carefree.
