Question for people who had English literature in high school (1 Viewer)

Whether as a foreign language or not. Did any of you read Beowulf or Canterbury Tales in high school? I was looking at a list of common books to read in high school and both were on there. Beowulf would obviously have to be translated because you can’t read that nowadays. Canterbury Tales also seem way excessive non translated. Given that students complain about Shakespeare being hard to read, I feel like anyone who reads Canterbury Tales must also read a translated version unless they’re studying linguistics. If you’ve read it, is that the case? Or did you actually read an older version?

We did read Shakespeare every year, but that was probably the hardest classic. We never read Beowulf or Canterbury Tales. I don't recall them being even referenced for overachievers to look into.

Aside from the Shakespeare every single year, I believe I read Beowulf junior year of high school and we watched the 2007 film Beowulf.

we read Beowulf in high school, but I don't remember anything except that we all thought it sucked and the teacher would pull our legs about it. lol she was a nice teacher, dgmw, but her sub after her permanent maternity leave was so much more fun.

leaning american history was cool however

We have to take English classes (4 of them). I didn't read it but another class did read Beowulf
