Question for photoshop users/graphics team (1 Viewer)

How did you get into it?


I want to make cool graphics. Specifically, things like banners and something cool for an artist thread. Also, if you're familiar with Myanimelist, then I want to be able to trick out my profile page. I am considering buying, but I am a bit afraid that I will be so noob at it that I will quit. Did you watch tutorials? Anyone specifically?

i have photoshot but i taught myself. i didn't watch a single tutorial. so its definitely learnable by yourself if that's what you're worried about but, it might be better to use tutorials. it took me a better part of a year to get good. i got into it because...

I saw @marublade and @Mayday and @/graphics team do such pretty graphics and I'm like "well I wanna do that too" so yeah

It was mandatory to learn it in my dept. I only really watched tutorials if I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

I took a class on photoshop when I was in high school and practiced the rest of the time by myself

school had photoshop, we spent maybe a month and a half on the unit; the rest I figured out by messing around with literally every tool when I had the spare time
now I mostly use a mix of ibispaint on my phone for doodles and gfx and photopea for colouring

I don't have Photoshop per se, but I have the Elements app, so kinda similar? lol but I just taught myself.

I used lots of tutorials tbh. I started using photoshop like 12 years ago, I was a kid so yeah tutorials were my base, you can find lots of things online. I can even recommend you some youtube courses and stuff.

Now this is my job so ofc I don't rely on tutorials anymore

I'm not the best at graphics/Photoshop, but I first got into it when I had to make book covers for my fanfictions lmao
I started off using apps on my phone just so that I could get a feel for things before I moved onto Photoshop

I learned by myself! I started out with GIMP and them eventually switched to Photoshop

I never really sat down and looked at tutorials to learn, the most I did is look up how to achieve a SPECIFIC effect I was trying to achieve. It takes a lot of experimenting for me tbh, sometimes I just pick up a tool or a brush and go hmmm... what does this do and how can I use this.

Another thing I often do, is I look at edits other ppl have made and think about what I like in them, what I don't. What have they done better than me, what I think I do better, how it was made etc.

Mostly all it takes to learn is going out and getting at it. it's hard at the beginning, but with every edit you make it gets easier.
Like... This is the stuff I made when I started out, it was all on one layer ( a nightmare, the more layers the better I tell you) I didn't know how to make the background transparent, I used like 3 different online sites or whatever to make this, bcs I didn't have a proper program either.

I used to use Photoshop at work, but mainly to edit customer's sent artworks for processing/tweaking for print-readiness.

I think the Photoshop for sale now is CS subscription only, rite? So even if ur a student, you hv to pay like 6 mths or a yr n then it stops? I nvr bought PS myself as i always used it at work n nvr touched it at home after work.

As above, can i suggest you try GIMP for free first? If you can stick with it for even a week, i think you wont get tired of PS CS version. Also try the ibispaint (tho i hvnt used it b4) first if u can.

I think any software tat u get used to isnt as important as just sticking with it(i suck at creating stuff, my forte is tweaking/editing wat is already there/minor stuff) but ur eye/vision is wat's important.

As above, i think no one immediately gets" photoshop n all its so many filters n functions n watnot. Even the classes i had to go through in Photoshop, i only learned slowly by using filters/layers n fonts after many attempts.

So dont give up immediately if its frustrating, if u buy Photoshop. Or even if u use Gimp/ibispaint.free gfx software.

I think after a week or a mth, u will definitely see improvement cos it depends on ur effort/eyes/vision.

So go for it(gimp/ibispaint first/or totally disregard my suggestion n buy Photoshop) n continue to work on it giving as much time as u can. I believe in you n im sure you will overtake my meagre attempts quickly.

PS or try canva(another software i hvnt used, but it shd work too-or at least you learn if it fits u as a software.)

the only one you don't have to buy a subscription is elements- and to be honest elements isn't really bad! you can't do gifs or folders, and its v bare-bones but its p easy to figure your way around things. I missed/skimmed over mysteric saying she uses/used gfx/photopea, i tested some free software but i got bored/demotivated cos no one paying me; i spent hrs or days researching/reading photoshop tutorial books when i started working tat i dont do tat anymore unless i need to learn sth for work.

Ur young, n more flexible to learn stuff so i advise/suggest just tryin' stuff out. Someday you can reach the heights of all the other users in banner-making/sigs/pfps n other edits too(not including myself cos im awful at wat the OP is tryin' to learn how to do.)

and i'm learning to use gimp too ^^
