Born Pink has been out for a little while now. To my fellow @Blink s (and everyone else), how are you all feeling about it?

Let’s see you rank the songs on Born Pink from best to worst. It can be a simple list, or with a bit of explanation.

Here’s mine:

1. Pink Venom

If you came here for hot takes you are out of luck. Is this the most boring pick for best song? Probably. Do I care? No.

You could argue that this track is nothing new or original, another DDU-DU DDU-DU clone. And while you’re right in some respects, it’s tracks like this that make up the signature Blackpink sound and give them their core identity. No Blackpink record would be complete without a few tracks in this style in my opinion, and out of those songs from across their discography this ranks as one of the best.

This song has some real highlights; the traditional Korean instrumentation of the verses and the 90s old-school hip-hop rap section both blew me away on first listen. That combined with the infectious chorus and simple-but-fun dance moves really sets this one apart as one of their greats.

2. Tally

This song is such an anthem! I just freaking love it. The lyrics are brilliant and I love that each member gets a chance to sing the chorus. It’s so great to hear Rosé, Jennie, Jisoo and Lisa all give their own rendition of “I say fuck it when I feel it - Cuz no-one’s keeping tally I do what I want with who I like.”

This ranks with Forever Young and Pretty Savage as the best Blackpink b-sides of all time in my opinion, and the girls dropping more F-bombs in tracks is something I can certainly get behind.

3. Ready For Love

A lot of the fun of this song got sucked out from it first being teased in Light Up The Sky a few years ago and then getting a cringe CG video with PUBG when it did eventually come out, but fuck it, this track still rocks in my opinion.

As someone who ranks Lovesick Girls as my all time favourite BP song, I see this as it’s closest spiritual successor. While it switches out the bittersweet lyrics for some a bit more earnest and hopeful it retains that European EDM sound which I think is another avenue the girls and Teddy should explore more in the future.

4. Shut Down

The second DDU-DU DDU-DU clone on the album. YG said the girls would be trying something new with this song, but other than sampled violins, it’s a generic a Blackpink song as they come. Still, that doesn’t stop me from bopping my head as I listen.

5. Yeah Yeah Yeah

This is another fun b-side, and while the lyrics to the chorus leave something to be desired, I love the 80s synths that come in.

6. Hard to Love

As a certified Rosé simp, I find this song a bit conflicting. While I love that she got a solo track on the album, the song doesn’t live up to On The Ground (my favourite song of last year) and Gone.

I think the song lacks focus in its tone. They lyrics seem pretty heavy, with Rosé’s acknowledgement that she cannot form lasting relationships due to deep psychological issues, but the melodies are pretty whimsical and don’t really mesh well. I’m a bit lost with how I am meant to feel listening to this song - happy or sad?

7. Typa Girl

Meh. It’s alright.

8. The Happiest Girl

Urrrgh. The only skippable song on this album. As someone who lives in the UK this sounds like any one of the trashy sappy ballads that fill the charts and playlists of Radio 1 every week. I’m not opposed to a ballad, but I want a YG ballad, not this generic crap. 2NE1 Lonely still crushes this song into dust, even if it’s 10 years old.

Agreed, I rank it above The Album too. Although I loved that record, it was one of both dizzying heights and crushing lows. You have S-tier songs like How You Like That, Lovesick Girls and Pretty Savage but then you have some of their worst like Ice Cream and the song with Cardi B.

The biggest crime of The Album in my opinion is the track list ordering. I always have to keep one finger hovering over the skip button because the best songs are interlaced with the worst. Imagine how much of an impact it would have had if it went: 1 - How You Like That - 2 - Lovesick Girls - 3 - Crazy Over You - 4 - Pretty Savage. All killer, no filler, and B-sides like Crazy Over You (which I like) get elevated further by being placed between 2 of their best.

Born Pink is a lot more consistent as a whole album in my opinion.
