Yesterday was my first day back to college from my winter break and my first class is Theatre Appreciation and I'm borderline wanting to withdraw after day one just cos of his policies.
Now I know college students shouldn't skip and that it's disrespectful to but let's be honest, we all do it. I've never met someone who has been attending for at least a semester who has never skipped a class for a non-legitimate reason.
But my theatre appreciation prof says that his attendance policy is you get THREE unexcused absences where you do not need to have formal proof of what you were gone for. After that, your grade will drop a FULL LETTER GRADE each time you do not attend class with a formally signed note by a professional or parent (basically someone other than you that has some authority)
Let me break that down for you: Say you have an A in the class due to what you got on assignments and exams. This is what your grade will STILL be based on how many classes you've missed:
- 3 classes: A
- 4 classes: B
- 5 classes: C
- 6 classes: D
- 7 classes: F
And his reasoning? Because ONE student, however many years ago, lied and said that 4 of his family members have passed away within the span of 3 months, and thus had to miss multiple classes for a while. My professor then contacts our university trying to help compromise for the student so that they don't penalize him. Turns out that he's actually been attending all of his other classes and he was basically like "Huh. Interesting..." and keeps this rule from now on.
LISTEN, I GET THAT YOU WANT AN ATTENDANCE POLICY, THAT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL IN A HIGHER EDUCATION SETTING. But at least be sane about it!! Most professors who require attendance only make it a percentage of your grade NOT DETERMINING YOUR WHOLE DANG FINAL GRADE! Again, I know that we shouldn't be skipping but again, we are ADULTS here. Not even most K-12 schools go this far with attendance. Imagine paying $532 USD per credit hour and your grade drops because you missed a few classes.
He then had to say "I'm not an asshole, I promise". I think that if you need to have a disclaimer that you aren't an asshole, maybe, it could be, a you problem.
