in their own group?
I believe that solo work for idols is really important even if it doesn't chart or sell well cause it gives them chance to truly show who they are as artist that you might not be able to see in the group (like Taeyeon hating many of SNSD's hit songs). But above artistry, I also think that some idols talents or potential are dulled in the group, maybe they can't showcase their best vocals, best rap or best dance moves in the group.
I'm not meaning that they should leave their groups, but that there is sth in many idols solo acts that they can't show in the group.
For example Big Bang: TOP can't truly unleash his binguness (apart from Sober and Fxxk it), Seungri channel his wannabe Justin Timberlake and Daesung can't really show how he can simultaneously be both biggest rockstar and elders' favored trot star while in Big Bang.
I'm joking, kinda, but seriously though:
--
Daesung: I think his voice doesn't fit so well with electropop that Big Bang mostly does. His voice is versatile, but he can bring most of it's tone and gimmics when singing rock, ballads or trot. He doesn't stand out in many of Big Bang's songs that much.
Taeyeon: She can show her vocals a bit on SNSD's songs, but she can't show herself as artist unlike in her solos.
Others?

I guess that's why many artist also go to different variety competitions like Hit the Stage and King of Masked Singer to showcase what they can do as individuals. Who would have known that Yezi can rap that well or that Ten is amazing dancer if they had just stayed in their groups?
