I've always had a minor minor gripe with certain female idols being called handsome...
since the word is always used to refer to female idols who aren't conventionally "femininely attractive" like in Itzy one would never call yuna like handsome

I think the rules for men being handsome and women being beautiful are less strict now days. No one could ever call Ryujin manly and she has blossomed in to a true beauty.

I don't disagree but why call them handsome then? and not just pretty like obviously they are a kpop idol so they are all pretty in one way shape or form...

True, but... I think the point in the handsome comment is because their beauty is different from the standard and expresses that they are beautiful in a way that makes straight women attracted to them. If that makes any sense at all. Its not derogatory, its exactly the opposite. A writer never just describes beauty as beauty. The description of what makes the beauty stand out is most important.

I have the same gripe honestly since while fans might not mean harm unless you know the person is fine or even prefers it then it can be an area of insecurity you are hitting calling a girl handsome since it's easy to feel more singled out like that if others are getting called beautiful more so.

Obviously not itzy specific but it relates to all of kpop since in kpop there is the (sometimes) official "visual" position which generally implies the member that best suits the korean beauty standards. However just having a visual doesn't imply the other members aren't pretty but if one calls a certain member(s) handsome but the rest of the group pretty or beautiful then yeah it's sorta weird lol
