Background:
Aimee Stephens was a transgender woman who worked at a funeral home. When she decided to start fully living her life as the women she was she informed her employer that she would be dressing in different attire. Her employer fired her for being transgender and so Stephens filed a lawsuit and was the pioneer of the supreme courts case. Due to health problems Stephens passed away on May 12 so she unfortunately is not able to see that her fight secured protections for LGBT people in America for generations to come.
The other two plaintiffs are Don Zarda and Gerald Bostock (they were represented by the same lawyer). Both are gay men that were fired because of their sexuality. In Bostock's case he had not openly come out to his employer but they found out he was in a gay baseball league and after that his employers and other institutions started to discriminate against him.
The ruling solidifies that Title VII of the Civil Rights act does indeed extend protections to people based on gender identity and sexuality.
