If you know me well enough, then surprise gifts are okay but I'll always prefer gifts that I ask for. Or unless they're sentimental like a handwritten letter, a handmade bracelet, a homemade food item, etc. Those are always the best gifts because you know they put a lot of thought and effort into it.

But the better method of asking for gifts is not to give a list with specific items but to give a list of your favorite things that could help them.

That way if you ask for a $70 photobook but they aren't looking to spend that much, they could probably buy you something cheaper that's similar to that interest or make you something.
