So, I've had this sitting in my back pocket for months waiting to be written, and now it's finally come to fruition! This (well, the first chapter, at least) is loosely based off an actual car accident I had back in 2015, except I wasn't pregnant and I was going to see 1D - hence the use of "loosely". lol Enjoy, and don't hesitate to comment!

Chapter 1

Rachel’s POV

The radio was on full blast as my roommate Sydney and I drove to Raleigh to see 5 Seconds of Summer in concert. The song that was playing was “Don’t” by Ed Sheeran, and Sydney and I were singing along to the music. In my belly, my unborn twins, who are expected to arrive in three weeks, seemed to be kicking to the beat.

As soon as the song finished, Sydney’s GPS instructed her to turn left onto Rock Quarry Road, where the arena was located, in a tenth of a mile.

“We’re almost there, Rachel!” Sydney said with much excitement. “I don’t know about you, but I’m totally not ready for this!”

I laughed. “I know, right? This is their first headlining tour; saying I’m proud of the guys would be an understatement!”

Two minutes later, Sydney was about to make the turn when I felt a jolt as she tried to avoid a car that was running his red light. She failed miserably, and the jerk hit us hard, the impact causing me to start leaking amniotic fluid.

“Good Lord, your water broke!” Sydney exclaimed. “We need to get you to the hospital, and fast!”

“But the concert!” I protested through painful contractions. “We need to see 5Sauce!”

“Do you want to give birth on the side of the fucking road?!” I shook my head no, and Sydney immediately dialed 911 on her cell phone. Shortly thereafter, two cop cars and an ambulance showed up to investigate the accident and take me to the hospital, respectively.

“What’s going on, ladies?” one cop asked. “We heard there was a crash.”

“Yeah, and that one of you is in labor,” one of the medics, a woman in her thirties, added.

“It’s my roommate!” Sydney freaked. “We were just hit by a jackass running a red light!”

“What’s your name and how pregnant are you?” the male EMT asked me as the two of them helped me onto the gurney.

“Her name is Rachel Townsend, and she’s thirty-seven weeks,” Sydney answered for me. “Rachel, I’m going to go ahead to the concert, but if I happen to meet the guys, I’ll give them your love.”

I nodded as a river of tears rolled down my face, and the medics slid me into the back of the ambulance and rushed me to the hospital for the birth.

***

At the hospital, it was determined that my cervix was at its full ten centimeters and that I was ready to push.

“Miss Townsend, whenever you’re ready, go ahead and push as hard as you can,” the doctor instructed.

I pushed consistently for five minutes until the first baby was out. “Here’s your first sweet baby girl!” Dr. Fletcher announced over her crying.

“One down, one more to go, Miss Townsend,” the delivery nurse reminded me. “On a count of ten, let’s have you push some more.”

Two minutes later, the second baby was out. By this time, the first baby was all done with being cleaned, clothed, weighed, and measured.

“And now you have two sweet baby girls!” Dr. Fletcher declared, placing both babies on my chest. “What are you naming them?”

“I don’t really know yet,” I said. “I wasn’t planning on naming them for another three weeks, because I thought I’d be delivering at 39 weeks.”

“We understand,” the delivery nurse said. “Take all the time you need.”

Once I was alone, after the doctor took the twins for their Apgar scores and tests, I called Sydney to tell her about it.

“Congratulations!” she said enthusiastically. “What are their names?”

“I haven’t decided yet,” I replied. “I think I will when the twins get back from their testing. How’s the concert so far?”

“It’s great! The opening act just finished, so we’re just waiting on 5Sauce.”

“Oh, how was the opening act?”

“They rocked – you would’ve loved them. They were a female-fronted band called Hey Violet; I’ll download some of their songs for you so we can listen in the car.”

“That was very thoughtful of you, Syd. I appreciate it.”

Just then, I heard screaming in the background, and Sydney told me 5Sauce was about to start.

“Have a good time!”

“I will, and good luck with your recovery.”

“Thank you.”
