It seems to be a common theme, I'll talk about some of the examples I know.
Firstly, Shinee was so bad at singing they were supposed to debut as a rap group. Jonghyun specifically was told (by an outside teacher) that no one would like his voice ever no matter how much he practiced. Shinee are arguably one of the most vocally talented groups in kpop now, and Jonghyun was one of the most talented vocalists.
Probably the most well known example is Taeyong. He was so bad at dancing when he joined SM that he was considered hopeless by his teacher. Now, he's one of the best dancers in the newer generation of kpop.
There's also Ten. His singing was bad since before SM, and even when WayV was formed, Yangyang said his high notes sounded like random screaming. Now he's one of WayVs best vocalists, and tbh I have to admit he's gotten a crazy amount better.
Taemin also used to be weak vocally when Shinee debuted (though tbf he was young). He's improved drastically though, and he can definitely hold his own, and he's a strong vocalists now.
Those are just the first examples that came to my head. It's nice to see success stories like these though, a d SM may have a lot of issues but clearly they're doing something right. Imagine if Jonghyun had listened to his teacher and gave up, or if Taeyong had thought he had no chance and quit. The world would be a much different place without their incredible skills.
