Hate to say it but there’s a good chance otherwise they might have asked Chanyeol and atleast denied/refuted those claims.

Since it’s not legally a crime they won’t do anything but yeah it’s up to the fans now.

They said they have no stance so either it's true or they REALLY don't have enough information to comment which then makes one wonder how they don't have communication with their own artist... Either way, this just shows that SM really no longer cares for EXO. They're basically pushing aside all responsibility so whether it's true or not, we're not going to know at all until Chanyeol releases a statement himself.

Perhaps they are acting that way because they know they can? The members are slowly drafted into military and they all have their solo careers on the start. I have had an itchy feeling that EXO will never be as it once was. Perhaps one small album as a group,but otherwise? They have all started their own projects and seem to be more or less successful, SM probably sees that and doesn´t put as much energy in them.

Also, if they told Chaneyol not to promote other brands and he did that anyway (for the exact same reasons as described above).... I understand how that could create some unpleasant atmosphere.

SM is known to stop caring at a certain point about their artists and at that point is when the dirt on them usually starts spilling since if SM wanted they could have buried these messes in a heartbeat but the fact they treat it like any other company would shows they aren't really that interested in the groups anymore
