Not all are that fun but still

1. It comes from the Green word hysterikos, which means suffering if the womb. As you might expect it was a disease associated with women and was kind of used as a catch all for a bunch of reasons (such as lower appetite, insomnia, muscle spasms, ect)
2. People back then thought the womb “wandered” through the body and had weird ways of “bringing it back” (like rocking horses)
3. In Europe in the Victorian Era hysteria became a very common diagnosis, especially targeting sexually frustrated women. Symptoms for this “disease” kept growing. One physician filled up 75 pages of symptoms and called it incomplete.
4. Women were prescribed a variety of things to cure their hysteria, including but not limited to bed rest, seclusion, tasteless food, sensory deprivation, leeches in the cervix, and so on
5. It was removed from the diagnostic rule book in 1980, eliminating isn’t as a disease
