Something I’ve noticed in Kpop… (1 Viewer)

I generally don’t make these more “serious” threads, but by making this I hope it can spark a calm conversation among other users, or just a place for others to express their opinions on the subject (whether you agree or disagree).

So basically I’ve noticed this thing that people bring up with idols who earlier in their careers they’re more bubbly, talkative, loud, playful, etc then as the idol usually ages they might become more calm, relaxed and less of a jokester (Take V from BTS as an example) and people often are disappointed that the idol has “changed” and become more calm over the years.

But yet, lets say an idol debuts with a very shy, quiet and reserved personality, they often are seen as very special and cute by fans and when/if they start to come out of their shell over the years fans are extremely happy for them. Not saying that’s bad btw, it’s really great to see idols grow in confidence.

But there’s always this celebration when an idol becomes more confident in themselves and less quiet, but if an idol debuts with an outgoing personality and then becomes more quiet or reserved, it’s seen as a negative thing and some will even get hate because of it. It’s just so odd to me, most idols debut very young and they’re bound to go through changes as they age so their personalities may also change and that’s not a bad thing. It’s part of life tbh.

Yes, age is definitely a factor at some point. But in the end, Idol life is so demanding that honestly, I can't really blame them.
On one hand, they're expected to constantly live up to expectations and flawlessly deliver. On the other, it takes its toll on them after a while. The schedules, the constant image makeovers, the severe diet routines, the agency structures, all of it.

Bottom line, its all fun and play when you debut and you're over the moon that you made it but at some point, your life evolves and you find yourself setting different priorities and goals along the way.

We're outside observers but they could probably tell us so much about it! Sera from 9muses has, to a great extent. You'll find many testimonies on her YT channel. Fame comes with a hefty price at times and some rather excruciating experiences!

Well, my ult is one who debuted bubbly/outgoing and has since gotten more reserved. Rather than hate him for it, I think it makes me love him more. He acted in a way that he did because as the leader he was responsible for his members, and one in particular was one who debuted very reserved and is now very outspoken/confident/loud. There are many hardships my ult has faced due to his position, both that we (fans) know about and those that we don't. I'm very proud of him and I look up to him, and that has not stopped since 2017 when I didn't know he existed. I think that this is just proof that his hard work early on in his career paid off and now he can relax. I hope he can always be relaxed in the future and just be himself

I think in general it’s a common theme with people. They think that outgoing is by default what you should be like and quieter/shyer is bad. To those people when a reserved person gets outgoing they’re “cured”, so a cause for celebration. But outgoing to quieter is “bad” because it’s the other way. It’s a stupid mentality

Agreed. I’ve had people say things like “we can fix that” when I tell them I’m a naturally quiet person.

Yeah, i hear that a lot about idols. To be honest sometimes i can see some idols getting sick of idol life. I don't fault them, but i can see that they are tired of the aegyo or the constant tours or rabbid stalker fans. Honestly i understand.

On the other hand when this is not the case, then we have to realize that as previous comments said, they are more excited at the beginning of their career. So was everyone when they started a work they love. Also they are made by their company to act more fun and lively, so of course after time they just let to show their real personalities.

One example is Hyunjin for me. He was really bubbly and all over the place like a fresh puppy when they debuted. I still remember during Back Door era too, but after that time he became really quiet. Of course he also grew up a lot, and had a new calming hobby in painting, but he seems really calm now. Compared to him Seungmin seems more bubbly and he was always known as the quiet kid.
