This is part of a series of informative threads about Star Wars. If you missed the others, you can find them here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 3.2, Part 4.1
With Darth Plagueis out of the map, Palpatine could finally move forward with his plan to overthrow the Galactic Republic and for this he would need participation of two very important players: Count Dooku and Master Sifo Dyas. Both of them were Jedi and long time friends from their time as padawans but had to leave the order under different circumstances.
Dooku was born in the planet Serenno from a family of noble ascendance but was taken as a child by Yoda to be a Jedi apprentice. He was master of Qui Gon Jin and always showed to be perceptive and autocritical when it came to the Jedi order's attachment to the Republic and the constant distrust and islationism their internal rules imposed over it's own members. This aspects of his personality took him to the realization that the Jedi became way to self-absorbed to take notice of the Republic's corruption and even less to how many Jedi were suffering due to the strict rules of detachment (human relations) imposed by the Order. He finally came to the conclusion that the Jedi had become nothing but political puppets for the Republic and this caused him to effectively abandon the order and return to his home planet.
It's not after a while that Palpatine came in contact with Dooku under the promise that together they could create a goverment suitable to his ideas. Was under those circumstances that Dooku turned to the dark side as Darth Tyrannus and started efforts to reunite all the parties that were discontent with the Republic. That faction included several planetary governments, The Intergalactic Banking Clan as well as The Trade Federation and united under the name of Confederacy of Independent Systems (C.I.S).
This movement was lead by Dooku as head representative of the CIS but at the end was nothing but another scheme of Palpatine to create chaos and ultimately worked. When the CIS in an attempt to prove strenght created an inmense droid army, the threat against the Republic became clear and Palpatine took advantage of the political tension to become Chancellor asking for exceptional powers to protect the republic from its enemies. To top it all over, Obi Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and Senator Padme Amidala were discovered in Geonosis (Planet Capital of the CIS) while trying to unveil Dooku's plan. This act was interpreted as espionage by the CIS and the later invasion of the planet by The Republican Army, sparked the war between both parties.
So, after all this, when comes Sifo Dyas? Well, Master Sifo Dyas was part of the Jedi Counsil but was expelled from the order after trying to warn the Counsil of the inminent war but even after this, Dyas knew was necessary to do something about it and went to the Planet Kamino to secretly order a clone army for the Republic per Jedi's request. The discovery of the Clone Army by Obi Wan Kenobi supposed a big turn of the events for the Republic and now they were full fledged against the Separatist* Army in what came to be known as the Clone Wars*.
In the meantime, Palpatine started to accumulate more and more power and decided that it was time to take on a new apprentice, seducing Anakin Skywalker to the dark side and revealing himself as the Sith Lord Darth Sidious. Skywalker was assigned by the Jedi to spy on Palpatine after they noticed the Chancellor's suspicious behaviour but Anakin himself was troubled with the Jedi's strict code and had a somewhat friendly relationship with Palpatine that of course, Palpatine easily manipulated to his own benefit, so even when Anakin denounced the Sith Lord to the Jedi Counsil, it was already too late.
Once Darth Sidious managed to escape the Jedi, it was time to take out his ace under the sleeve and by showing himself as the victim of a jedi attack, ordered the death of every member of the Order using their own clone soldiers, in which is known as the infamous Order 66*.
And that's how in one single move, The Galactic Republic and the Jedi order, fell at the hands of the Dark Lord and the era of the Galactic Empire begin.
*Sifo Dyas: There's not much to say about him. In the new canon, Dyas is presented as someone who had strong and apparently uncontrolably force visions of the future during his whole life and that's how he knew about the war. I haven't seen any details on how he became a master or why the Jedi didn't believe him and decided to expulse him instead.
*Order 66: This is the order given by Emperor Palpatine to exterminate the Jedi and take control over the whole clone army. It turns out that Palpatine had knowledge about the clone army all along and told the Kaminoans to implant a chip in every clone soldier in order to have absolute control over their actions. The details of how Palpatine had the information about the clones is unclear. Maybe the Kaminoans gave him the information, maybe Dooku knew about it because he and Sifo were friends and kept their good relationship for a while even after Dooku was done with the Order...
* The Clone Wars: Conflict between the Clone Army (Republic) and the Droid Army (C.I.S)
*Separatists: Another way to call the Confederacy of Independent Systems
Thank you for making it this far, I hope you all have enjoyed. See you in part 4.3
