What are the factors contributing to the decline in wild tiger populations?
Approximately, there are only 4,500 tigers left in the wild! The five main reasons for this are; poaching, loss of habitat, climate change, human conflict, and illegal trading of tiger parts. I will be covering how these factors are affecting the overall numbers of tigers still left living in the wild. It is important we do something now - before it is too late.
From extensive literature research, both online and within books, poaching has become one of the primary reasons for the constant decrease in tiger populations. Poaching is used by poachers to make a profit off of the bones, which they sell illegally on the black market. Bones and other body parts of a tiger are used in a multitude of Chinese medicines, but due to the demand being so high - and there not being enough tigers to meet this demand - the prices for tiger parts have increased significantly over the past few years. Prices have been as high as $50,000! Which is approximately equivalent to £40,500 in the UK.
However, there have been a large number of conservation projects that aim to prevent human-tiger conflict, along with reducing the illegal poaching and trading of body parts. By improving the relationship between the locals and the wild tiger populations, less killing will occur out of both spite and misunderstanding. A lot of reasons why tigers are killed is due to this misunderstanding - not realizing the effects increased habitation loss, poaching and retaliatory killing is having. They are more likely to retaliate, and thus, humans will retaliate back. It’s a continuous cycle, which can be stopped by organizations, such as WWF, providing information on how to live in peace with the big cats that inhabit the same areas as humans.
(sorry lol only way the graph would go in

The graph above shows the collective data recorded by WPSI - which does have a limited area where they operate - but shows just how bad the effect of poaching is having on the wild tiger population. As stated, it is up to date and has data as recent as January, 2023, making this graph’s information highly reliable.
Conservation Efforts Being Done To Reduce The Loss Of Wild Tiger Populations
Tigers of all kinds will inhabit a multitude of biomes from tropical rainforests to savannas, grasslands to mangrove swamps and evergreen forests to snowy forests. However, these beautiful habitats are being destroyed by humans for agricultural use, as well as timber, leaving the tigers with an ever decreasing home to survive within. Moreover, the ‘expansion of oil palm plantations’ is also one of the main reasons that almost 20% of the Sumatran Tiger’s habitat has been destroyed.
Its not finished yet FYI :D
