In 1917, two ships collided in the harbor in Halifax, Canada. One of them was the SS Mont-Blanc, which was carrying explosives. The resulting explosion was so strong that one of the guns on the SS Mont-Blanc was found 3.5 miles/ 5.6 km north of the actual site of the explosion. A part of the anchor of the Mont-Blanc, weighing half a ton, was also found 3 km/ 2 miles south of the site of the explosion. The explosion also caused a 60 ft/ 18 m tsunami in the harbor.

With those stats, I assume that few people will be that surprised that this explosion is the largest non nuclear man made explosion to date. Quite a chonker

The Titanic sank in 1912 yes, and its sister ship, the Britannic, also sunk in 1916. In the case of the Britannic and the Halifax explosion, the reason those things happened was because of WW1. The SS Mont-Blanc would never have been allowed into the harbor in peacetime due to the potential danger, and any ship carrying explosives would have had a red flag as a warning in peacetime. The Lusitania was also another prominent ship that was sunk in 1915 as a result of WW1. That said, the Titanic was sunk in peacetime, WW1 didn’t affect it. So I kinda just went off topic but oh well
